You could walk up to Loch Brandy - it's a beautiful loch which sits in a corrie at just over 600m above sea level on the east side of the glen, starting at the Glen Clova Hotel.  It's a steep climb but on a good well-constructed path (unless the lower slopes are obliterated by snow!)   The route details and some photos are in the link below. I would still make sure you have a map though and check the MWIS forecast for mountain weather before setting off.   Not sure if you'll be guaranteed snow there as it appears to be becoming milder towards the end of the week - from info online it appears there is currently full snow cover at that level though.

I wouldn't recommend going up onto the plateau above (Ben Tirran area) unless you have well-practised navigation skills and winter hillwalking experience as it is a vast rather featureless plateau with great potential to get yourself into difficulties in winter!  It was still snow-covered in early May 2012 when I visited the loch and continued on to Ben Tirran.

There are some other walks in the area amongst these too (Corrie Fee also has some stupendous scenery):

    Hi,

Thanks very much for the information! I would be hopeful some snow cover could be retained up there at 600m but as you say it depends how mild the weather becomes. Fingers crossed the breakdown continues to be delayed, at least till after next weekend.

I will take a look at those links and bear your suggestions in mind for our trip, a visit to the loch sounds like a great idea!

  2. Hi All!

I'm a long time reader of this forum although not much of a poster.

Great to see so many of us get some snow over the weekend. Here in Prestonpans we have been pretty unlucky. No lying snow all Winter despite other parts of East Lothian receiving a few coverings. Got a slight dusting yesterday but were too far East and missed the heaviest of the precipitation, typical! Still, the seasonal weather is definitely a bonus!

On another note, I am heading up to the Glen Clova area this weekend and have been hoping there would be snow but it's not looking good! Do any of you know the area at all? I've never been and was wondering if there are walks in the area that go up to a decent height where it's likely there would be snow on the ground even if there's none in Glen Clova itself. Would appreciate your advice. Thanks :)

  3. Got my eye on the large blob passing Stirling just now, Edinburgh and E Lothian look in the firing line!

Edit: I should say pretty much all of SE Scotland

Can confirm said blob just reached Prestonpans and ground turning white straight away!!  :)

  4. The mesoscale models did suggest we might get some snow a bit further north but so far nothing's managing to get past West Lothian. Still, good to see the west and south getting in on the act after not doing that well on Tuesday. Certainly no reason to be downbeat, there's every chance that tomorrow morning could be a bit better here with the flow slackening turning more like straight westerly:

Early Sunday still looks interesting too, a more toned down version of December 22nd/23rd 2009 perhaps with organised snow heading south down the east coast:

Tantalisingly close to a very snowy Sunday night into Monday morning too for the east:

Would be an absolutely perfect time for it with -8C uppers in place:TT_GZ_UU_VV_060_0850.gif

A slight southwestward correction of the whole pattern would do wonders there, and might temporarily stop the carnage on the MT too (although I doubt the 'M4 snow paradox' or 'Schrodinger's snow line' will ever be fully resolved  ).

Appreciate your very informative posts LSS.

You seem confident of any precipitation being snow down the eastern side over the next few days. Do you envisage any marginality at all here from now until Monday? Notice the met indicate possibility of rain/sleet. Be good to take a hit from one of these potential snowfalls over the next few days.

Currently 1C here and dry. No snow to be seen thus far.

  5. Heavy snow shower here for past 20 minutes. Trying to lie on grass, cars etc but roads and pavements just wet. Are conditions expected to get a bit more favourable for lying snow after dark?

  6. I wouldn't take it those too literally, they do have a tendency to overdo snow accumulations, but I wouldn't be surprised if you ended up with some lying snow. A lot depends on where the heaviest showers end up, which on this run is a bit further north, so consequently half (or maybe more) of your hypothetical accumulations were wiped out in 6 hours:

I think anyone below 200m getting over an inch out of this should consider themselves lucky, it's not inconceivable that somewhere could max out on luck and get 2+inches (most of us are definitely overdue on that front) but air temperatures still don't look cold enough that you can assume snow will settle easily.

You might be alright but at the moment it looks like a lot of the shower activity will be around the Lothians at that time:

    Definitely looks a nowcast situation.

    Thanks for the reply LS!

Yea I know those charts ought to be taken with a pinch of salt but we can dream :)

To be honest I'll just be happy to see snow on the ground here, a cm or two will do me!

You could do reasonably well in Freuchie if you get your fair share of showers!

Looking at that chart I reckon I'll give Falkirk a miss tonight! Plenty snow around at that time by the looks of it.

Gusty and drizzly here at the moment but winds nothing like as strong as this time yesterday.

  7. The GFS has clearly decided that we got off too lightly this time:

    h500slp.png ukwind.png ukwind.png

Those are sustained winds by the way, gusts easily 90-100mph. The track keeps changing so hopefully it'll weaken and end up much further north/south (long term further south probably best).

Still looks decent for snow tomorrow afternoon/evening, again more marginal the further south/west you are (and probably not quite as cold as EURO4 shows) but what falls will almost certainly be snow from about midday through to Sunday morning, so with a bit of luck, and a bit of intensity, we could well see some decent accumulations to low levels.

The consensus seems to be that temperatures for most start off around 3-4C at midday (down drastically from the 12C we could see tonight) before getting down to 1-2C. West of Glasgow may see temperatures struggle to get below 3C except in the heaviest showers and that would obviously mean a lack of accumulations but certainly looks like showers should get right through to the North Sea fairly easily.

As ever, it looks pretty good for both MoffatRoss and NL to get a few cms, hopefully the rest of us can join in as well this time:

    15011100_0906.gif 15011106_0906.gif

EURO4 suggesting 10cm for the Lothians, D+G, Moray and Inverness, and 5-10cm for most of the rest of us, but if we got half that I'd be chuffed:

    15011106_0906.gif

10cm's of snow for us in Prestonpans right on the Forth? I'll believe it when i see it. Like many of you i have yet to see snow on the ground this winter or last so hoping for a little something tomorrow. Supposed to be driving to Falkirk tomorrow evening but i gather that may not be a good idea?

  8. Seen this on metcheck earlier:

We are currently monitoring the possibility of a rogue vortex embedded within Storm Nadjas circulation to bring heavy snow and blizzard conditions for a time across North-west England, South-west and Eastern Scotland during the early hours of Saturday morning and into Saturday afternoon.

Freezing levels are likely to drop to between 300-400m within this vortex with the possibility of this lowering to 100-200m as the system pushes North-east bringing snow and accumulations in strong Southerly gales to lower levels.

How likely is this is come off and is there the potential for it to affects areas as low as mine or more likely to affect areas a bit higher up?

  9. Seems the media are forgetting the battering Scotland will take from this up coming storm!

Should we expect a belt of the strongest winds to funnel through the central belt as is often the case or is the worst of this storm likely to be limited to the NW?

Sleet showers here earlier, no snow! Posted Image

  10. It could do this for the next 24 hours here and with nowt to show for it. Need something to change in our favour. Uppers, wind direction, temps, dew points ... anything!

Been snowing steadily here now for past 30 minutes but not heavy enough to cover anything to be honest. Need a real step up in intensity for a real covering to develop here. Light covering on grass, cars and roofs, slushy pavement and nothing on the roads...

  11. Hi LSS,

After your last prediction being spot on about the last snow event in my area a few weeks ago I just wondered what your thoughts were on tonight and tomorrow in Prestonpans?

Was very surprised to see us in the metoffice amber warning area being beside the forth with all this talk off rain/sleet at the east coast but then again I suppose we aren't on the immediate east coast as such.

    Would appreciate your thoughts.
