  1. Can anyone tell me why (on the IOW lightning page) there are red dots constantly over ne'ern france when you play the loop?

I think because there are so many strikes of lighting about, the plotter is having a little trouble mapping exactly where the srikes are occuring, seems to be blocking them together in a large mass at the minute. May change as they work a little closer towards the base station, but i wouldn't bank on it with the current strike rate being so high!

  2. On another note. been reading the recording on these storms and it seems they are producing lots and lots of +CG & +IC strikes. Is there any reason for them to produce more positive strikes? Most storms I have witness tend to produce negative strikes in the UK :)

This might also be why tamara is reporting very vivid bright lightning, as if i'm correct positivly charge lightning packs a much bigger punch voltage wise than negative bolts!

  3. Damn anyone noticed the latest METO radar, thats some seriuosly heavy rainfall in those storms, the infrared sat i pretty good also, showing some really high cloud tops going on the reflectivity of the storm clouds... You lucky people in kent are in for some stinkers shortly :)

I'm jealous, if i'd got a free day today and a decent car i'd hav driven down to the south east coast tonight, looks like some really great opertunities for lightning photos tonight :)

  4. The weather forcast on BBC LookEast at lunchtime hinted at the possibility of heavy possibly thundery showers along the east anglia and south east coasts on friday afternoon sparked off by the rising temperatures. I feel temps of 25 or 26 degrees celsius inland are likely to initiate some strong sea breezes and with and easterly wind bringing moisture in from the north sea, we are likely to see some low to mid level convergence. Likely areas look like being eastern cambridgeshire, norfolk, suffolk and essex. Kent and eastern sussex may well catch a few heavy showers or storms from northern france later in the day.

please excuse any typo's, the laptop keyboard is a bit tempremental at times!

  5. could somebody tell me whether this band of showers (possibly thundery) are likely to move any further east, as currently they are about 30 miles to the west of me, around the nottingha area. Any response would be grateful, thanks.

Not sure if they are actually moving eastwards at the moment, they seem to be more or less stationery or moving slowly NNW as the easterly flow seems to be holding back the westerly encroach.

  6. stopped raining here now about 5 mins or so ago, everything is nice and wet. Do the old gardens good though. The showers around here and further south look like they are intensifying rapidly and seem to be feeding off of the avaliable CAPE. Some of the cores look very intense now, wouldn't be suprised if people start to report hail soon, then maybe fingers crossed electrical activity :)

Update: I'm sure i've just seen some IC lightning to the east of my location. Can't hear any thunder though :)

  7. Think Milton Keynes is sitting smack under the convergence zone at the minute, theres some mighty dark looking clouds building and the atmosphere feels extremely potent. Very warm and sticky out, allready had a few drops of heavy rain. :)

Heavy rain now falling from a very dark stormy looking sky. Coming straight down like rods as there is no or very little wind!

  8. A little off topic, but yesterday a 14 yr old Boy in Manchester was hit by Lightning whilst sheltering under a tree in a park, he has burns to 10% of his body and was knocked unconcious by the bolt.

That is why you should never shelter under a tree during a thunderstorm. Quite astonishing really how many people take shelter in potentially dangerous places during thunderstorms

  9. Nice and wam here today allready hit 20'c in the centre of milton keynes @ 13:00hrs. Just the odd large cumulous floating about at the minute, but the sky looks much clearer than yesterday so any showers that do form look like having a greater chance of absorbing the surrounding avaliable energy. BBC earier were saying the majority of the beefiest showers will be in the midlands once more today, so people need to keep thier eyes peeled as photo opertunities look much better than yesterday afternoon :nonono:

  10. Intersting developments around this area in the last hour or so, thought all the convection had moved north by now. In the last hour seen a few TCu's develop to my north one of while has grown a full blown anvil as it's moved off towards northamptonshire. Met radar is showing some very heavy precip from it on the last update, probably gonna fire up the old electrics before sundown, so all those in northants / notts keep your eyes peeled

  11. Can't say i've ever had the unfortunate luck to actually be struck by lightning. Come pretty close though on 3 seperate occasions. You'd think i'd have gotten the message by now! lol.

1st time I was cycling back to parents house and decided i'd cross over the old railway bridge during a raging thunderstorm into a field filled with long grass. The only two things in the field were me and a large oak tree by the railway tracks. Luckily the lightning hit the tree and metal fence running along the back edge. One hell of a bang, definately brown trousers time!

2nd time I was out fishing when a thunderstorm started to come accross, put all my rods and tackle down just incase, the lighting actually hit the upright mast of a sailboat that was anchored a way out in the lake, huge crack of thunder and some pretty sparks from the mast none the less. Then i realised I was actually sitting under my fishing brolly that has a large metal spike on top.... Oooopppss O_o

3rd time was last year july 4th to be precise. I was out filming a really nasty storm with a vast ammount of CG lightning and torrential rain and hail. A house less than 200yrds from my location got hit by a huge CG bolt which blew the chimney and half the roof off, right infront of my eyes. Sadly I was unable to catch the bolt on camera, just wasn't fast enough!

Looking forward to this summers storms and photo opertunities, will be out in the storms once more. Hopefully the lightning won't be so close though :whistling:

  12. I'm just interested here as to why people are so frightened / pertrified of thunderstorms?

I've seen numerous people posting comments over the last few days saying how glad they are that there has not been any storms in thier respective locations.

As a young child I used to be pretty scared of thunderstorms, especially the ones that used to hit overnight in the summer months and seem to last for hours. Once I got a little older though and looked into the specifics of thunderstorms thier development and what causes them then fear changed into great interest and I have been hooked on watching / chasing and filming storms in my local area ever since :)

Please feel free to discuss your phobias and fears of storms, as I'm interested in why they scare some people so much!

  13. Great photos there. Really gives the saying " The Plains - Place where the Earth meets the Sky! "

Those photographs really give you a perspective on how low these clouds actually come downward, looks like the sky is gonna fall on your head!

    :cc_confused:
