  1. People dismissing low temps forecast as ridiculous- Jan 1987 Shooters Hill early morning waiting for a bus my hair froze records show London had min -9c max -5c -Central London on several occasions have had maxs of -5c. Biggin Hill 1987 Min -11c max -7c . Once snow falls overnight clear skies no wind even the tropical city centre can fall below -6c

  2. Many snow events in the past the forecast would mostly have a breakdown at the end of it and many times the cold continued. If snow falls and settles then that will bring max temps down to freezing and that has a knock on effect . Sleet and snow possibly for high ground tonight

  3. Can I just say this is a fantastic set up and as Teits says we may be facing the coldest period of weather probably since February 1991. If you were to look back at the charts then it was a slow build up to the main event . In all my weather watching years there is only been one other memorable December event and that was in 1981 so these charts are very rare . Unlike Feb 1991 which fizzled out quickly after the main event if the charts verify we will be looking at a much longer cold event.Patience is needed but the BBC early forecast this morning said by the end of the week very cold and snowy. We talk about weather of old as though it was continuously cold and snowy but of course it wasn't and if we could watch the models then as we can now , we would definitely be getting excited. Anyway on a personal note the high North Downs in Kent may well see sleet and snow before the main event as temps are lower than forecast.

  4. Just wondering if the North Downs at 650ft in Kent will have snow rather than Rain/Sleet next MON/TUES . Often happens when things are marginal. If the real deal comes in on Friday it wont matter where you are it will be dry snow. Remembering the really cold winters of old in the late seventies and eighties max temps -5c have been known. The last time central London had max of -4.5Cis Feb 1991 with nearly a 10ins of dry snow which lay for 6 days even in the City. Greater London areas were a lot colder and snowier. :D . .

  5. Good one Mr Data. Nice to see a photo of where I live -Good old Biggin Hill -The Bus 410 was going to Bromley North Station but not for some time by the looks of it. All of that area is over 600ft high and if the winds are strong Easterly with snow then the Main Road gets blocked. There many old photos of The Biggin Hills main road blocked but alas the last time was Jan 1987 when the airport road was blocked with 20 foot drifts and buried a bus, a snow plough and many cars. Trouble is I have never seen a photo of it and would love to do so

My old met-office book described December 1938 like this

This was the best example in the 20th century of a traditional White Christmas. Snow commenced to fall on 18th December and continued practically every day up to and including 26th December , being particularly heavy on the 20th and 21st . Even in Central London snow lay to a depth of 5-6ins . The weather was intensely cold so that snow persisted and the parks and secluded parts of the city presented a typical Christmas card scene with buildings, trees and ground all covered in snow.

    Mean Temps F(Greenwich) 24th 25th 26th

    1938 33.1 32.1 33.3

    1961 30.7 30.0 33.5

    1962 30.7 30.5 29.1

    2009 Tempting fate I know

  6. Mr Data I love reading your posts and like you I am fascinated by past data

Just found my old London Weather book which I bought from the Old Met office in Holborn 35 years ago. (Official records recorded at Greenwich and Kew run from 1841 to 1964 in the book). According to records 70f was reached at Tottenham and 69F at Camden square on the 5th Nov 1938, December that year had the best White Christmas of the 20th century( description as follows . Snow commenced to fall on the 18th December and continued practically every day up to including 26th December being particularly heavy on the 20th and 21st. Even in Central London snow lay to a depth of 6ins . The Weather was intensely cold so that the snow persisted and the parks and secluded parts of the city presented a typical Christmas Card scene with buildings trees and ground all covered in snow. Bring it on this year. 67f recorded at Greenwich in 1847 and at Kensington on the 4th November 1946 -wow I'm sure the cold 1947 winter was not predicted then. The lowest max 25f at Kew on the 28th November 1890. Since 1923 at Kew the max temp has always exceeded 32f . For anyone disappointed that there are no cold spells on the horizon . from 1880-1964 according to records in the book at Kew there has only been one cold spell of 5 days where the daily max has been 37f or below. A 1 in 84 year event . The 1993 cold spell was truly exceptional with snow laying at Biggin Hill for 7 days and a freezing day to boot mixed in. .

  7. A very light covering of big snow flakes(you can make out the individual flakes on the car) in Biggin Hill this morning soon melted though on my way to work.

Pretty impressive winter really with 5 months of having a few days with lying snow

Late Oct -light night covering Nov Light covering Dec 2ins cover for most of a week Jan light cover for early Jan -Feb Heavy snow 1ft for most of the week enhanced by a further covering on Friday 12th which meant for the first time I had to abandon the Car. and now a very light covering of real snow this morning.

6 months- and I do expect a bit more for March into April who knows even May which has happened on the Downs one May night a few years ago.

  9. This is what makes British Weather so fascinating. Temps at 7pm when I got home 1.5c sleet and rain. Took my son to his girlfriends house st 8.30pm temps up to 4.5c and feeling positively mild. As another poster posted if only this rain had been snow it would have been the snow storm of the last 120 years. Oh well the beer tonight has been good and the rain outside is getting heavier but I do feel there will be a sting in the tail (sorry Teits only just read your post so I'm not copying)and we will be getting lying snow by morning, which to be honest I do appreciate but there is one thing I love about snow more than anything and that is to watch it fall and settle.

  10. Good to see the Massive Centrale population in Tonight-

Mike can you keep us updated with landmark Depwoints- 1.5C, 1C etc-

    Biggin Hill was 1c earlier-

Charlton ( keep us updated as well) we should be able to get the feel for the change is coming-- if it does.....

    Hi Steve

On my way home soon but if there is a chance it will happen very quick. On Friday my wife popped into the supermarket and it was sleet/rain twenty minutes later when she came out the roads and pavements were covered. Fingers crossed for everyone who loves snow -will make this dreary day bearable if it happens. :) . Definitely will be posting if things start to get interesting but unlike Friday I have a feeling this is far more marginal.

Good luck to one and all.

  11. For the south east corner region it is going to be basically wet and also very windy (nothing overly strong though) with the ppn becoming more wintry in nature later tonight and especially tomorrow morning. But proper settling snow looks very unlikely. Essentially a colder southerly tracking version of the atlantic gunk we often endure.

I'm only intererested in the weekend onwards, when this marginal low buisness will have long cleared off and some blocking will start arriving and hopefully the north sea snow machine will crank into action to provide a snowy end to the winter for the region (and beyond perhaps).

Still believe that a colder version of the Feb 05 spell awaits. :)

    Hi NSSC

Do you think higher elevations will get snow later tonight . Last Friday it took me 3 hours to get home from Bromley to Biggin Hill(7 miles) as it was hit by unexpected heavy snow for a short period which gave about 6cms of snow. This caused bedlam as the roads had not been gritted. Unfortunately many cars were abandoned including my own which resulted in a 2 mile walk across the snow fields of the North Downs in the dark and it is quite remarkable how easy it was to find footpaths through normally pitch black woods because laying snow lit the way.

Very Christmassy scene in the morning . The surrounding areas lower down only had sleety rain.

If your prediction is correct for a repeat of Feb 05, but a colder version that would be fantastic, as the Downs had laying snow for over fortnight and the snow was of the dry and crisp version which is my kind of snow. :(

    Regards CND

  12. I thought you guys in E.Kent would've had a bit more snow than that, perhaps it started as rain then and turned to snow later.

    Regards,

    Tom.

Morning charlton n-d, I see your lurking.

Hows my favourite part of the Kentish Alps looking this morning. :shok:

    Hi Tom

Had to dash off this morning for a tennis match at Kings Hill Near Maidstone. Driving through parts of Kent with a nice covering of snow then on the outskirts of Maidstone-Nothing at all. Unfortunately due to the bitter cold the courts were iced up and so it turned out to be a wasted journey. Lovely to get back to a snowy Biggin Hill which apparently got a mention on Television or radio according to one of my tennis pals. We really only got about 2.5 ins at the top but it stuck everywhere , problem is the roads had not been gritted so they were like ice-rinks.

What do you think of SE Chances for the next batch. According the Radio Kent the SE will get light snow tomorrow evening/Monday morning and a longer spell of snow on Tuesday. Fantastic winter if you like cold and snow which I do.

    Regards CND

  13. Snow depth probably about 2 to 2.5ins which has mixed in nicely with the snow from Monday. Pleased it has covered the trees again and we should have the coldest night temps of the winter this weekend with somewhere in the South East in a rural area getting down to -12c. will be even colder in the snow fields of the Midlands.

  14. Snowing a lot harder now in Biggin Hill and I would not be surprised to see about 4ins to 5ins of snow by morning. Beautiful Christmas card scene with snow on the trees which has enhanced and added to the foot of snow we had on Sunday/Monday.

Just seen the latest weather forecast on BBC and the presenter said all next week will be cold and a potential for a snow event for Southern Counties on Monday. Wow! what a winter.

  15. Ah cn-d, Biggin never fails to deliver does it. I was ridiculed by my colleagues when I suggested that Biggin Hill had 2" of snow in under an hour, earlier on at work. Its not anything unusual for Biggin, that kind of fall.

I remember a number of years ago going up to B.Hill one night for a snow chase. Beckenham/Bromley had rain with a few flakes now and again. Got on bus from Bromley North in steady rain, just past Bromley Common a wall of snow hit us and as we climbed towards B.Hill the snow became heavier and heavier and was settling more and more.

Bus arrived in B.Hill High Street, snow was nearly 4" deep, had a look around for a while then got bus back to Bromley, nothing but cold rain there.

Back to the now, came out of work in Croydon just before 7 in sleet, New Addington tram stopped nearby and tinkered with the idea of jumping on it (only 20 mins from Croydon) but thought better of it, had I been younger and snowless this week I would've been up for it. I would imagine if B.Hill has 3+ ins then N.Addington has an inch or so. Saw plenty of cars coming into Croydon with a couple of inches on their roofs, no doubt having come up over the N.Downs south of Croydon.

Walked down to Anerley (SE20) from Crystal Palace station with a few flakes falling, although seems to have stopped now.

Snow cover here has taken big hit but still plenty of spots with some snow and ice, that have a northerly aspect.

Heres to the next bout. :o

    Hi Tom

Sometimes its difficult to make people believe the difference in height that Biggin Hill makes when it comes to marginal events. When I left work tonight my boss was very sceptical about the snow in Biggin Hill but when he recieved a call from one of his workers saying that she had to abandon her car at Keston and was walking to Biggin Hill it confirmed everything. Tomorrow I have an important tennis match at Kings hill near Maidstone and I am surprised the match is on but they have no snow what so ever very similar to Bromley -although there is snow there it has hardly settled. Anyway it is still snowing lightly but everywhere the roads are very icy with about 2 to 3 inches of snow. :D

    all the best CND

    Regards,

    Tom
