  1. I really hope this doesn't all go belly up at the last minute. I pronised my kids a chance of snow during the prolonged cold spell we had and nothing happened, I promised them snow from the last snow spell we had and it was gone by the time they got home from school. Please, please, please let there be something for them this time. The model thread is a nightmare, we have posts from it's a downgrade, it's going torain, it's going to sleet, it's going to light snow to 6 foot drifts, all for the SE, any idea which one sit's gonna be?
  2. Ditto but don't think it even reached 1 inch here, a centimeter at best but I have seen several persistant patches in areas as I drive around.
  3. I blame global warming. You see the planet is warmer now so it offsets against the air temperature so the you need much colder air then in the past to allow the surface of the water.......i'll get my coat, hat, gloves, scarf...... Haven't got any water near me that I can check but remember playing on frozen lakes in the 80's. I don't suppose it has been cold enough for that sort of ice to form though has it?
  4. According to the latest advisery Kyle is just below hurricane strength and is expected to become a hurricane today. Yet the thread started with the forescast that he most likely won't make hurricane status and is weakening, never underestimate the power of mother nature or her fickleness. ;-)
  5. If you get little boxes with red crosses in then it's probably your browser blocking them from being displayed.IF you are using IE go to tools, internet options, advanced and scrol down and look for a setting that says display pictures and make sure it's ticked.
  6. Watching at http://www.maroonspoon.com/wx/ike.html and it's eerie as different reporters in different locations do their reports suffering different effects, ie on one picture someone is in the eye in their t shirt and then the next screen dressed in full wets getting blown to the four corners of the earth.
  7. Guess their highest priority is to mow the lawn on their return, afterall with al that water the grass is bound to grow a lot!
  8. Some 40% of Galveston's population remained behind. It's crazy, NO was nearly completely evacuated for Gustav yet there wasn't much damage, wonder how many of the 40% were thinking that things won't be so bad?
  9. Yeah just saw that too. A bit upsetting to see people with their young children and babies there though planning to ride it out because they claim they cannot leave and are afraid something will happen to their house. It will be sad to see how many young pointless deaths there could be, no posessions are worht more then life itself. Lets hope they don't regret their stupid decisions.
  10. Never say never. Sure, i'm not a forecaster, I just like weather however reading these threads there has been talk of Ike hitting TX as a 5 and now talk of it hitting as a 1, that is quite adifference and goes to show how hard it is to predict these things. When I went to bed 8 hours ago people were still takling about a cat 4 hit and now it's a cat 1 hit? This is of course good news for Texas though.
  11. Just wathced an interview on http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/feature?sectio...&id=6102015 and a guy with his family including a baby in Galveston is basically saying he can't be bothered to evacuate because he doesn't want to sit in a traffic jam! They live in a single story building below sea level! The mind boggles.
  12. I wouldn't worry too much about trying to fathom out what makes it tick, I mena Gustav at one point was being forecast as a high 4 low 5 and look at how he fooled everyone. Simple weather forecasting is a nightmare most times so trying to work out what a hurricane is going to do in 24-48 hours must be almost impossible! We know it's going to be wet and windy somewhere along the Gulf coast just not how wet or how windy ;-)
  13. Waht's the betting that if it does turn out to be a New Orleans strike that less people evacuate this time citing Gustav not being as bad as expected?
  14. Like all weather a lot can change between now and then. A few days ago I had my inlaws worried that they would be landing in Orlando today in the middle of a hurricane, now 2 days later and Hannah is a tropical storm nowhere near Orlando. Just goes to show how hard these things are to track. I wouldn't be suprised if Ike swings around in a big circle and ends up in England!
  15. Thanks for that, so basically they will be escaping the cold, wet and windy British weather to some hot, wet and windy weather in Florida?
  16. I posted this in TD9 but i'll stick it here too. My Sister in law and in laws are going to Florida (Orlando) on Thursday, with Hannah and now Ike on it's way it's not looking like a good time to be holidaying there. From the forecasted track of Hannah does that mean on it's current path that flights into Orlando would likely be disrupted? I don't know where the airport is or how close Hannah will be.

  18. With the situation looking better and better for this storm to be less powerfull then originally forecast what are the bettings that there will a backlash against Mayor Nagin and his Storm of the century quotes? You just know there will be those that pick up on that and will be upset about being forced to evacuate if they didn't need to. Unfortunatly it's a lose lose situation for the Mayor in times like these as we just cannot predict weather reliably into the future with any great accuracy. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. It's still quite amazing that even with all the technology we have it's still so hard to take all the factors into consideration of mother nature. Just watching a video now as he and a news team discuss arranging a sleep over in city hall.
  19. Not sure if this belongs here but i'll post it anyway. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/7313264.stm It's a piece about the Wilkins Ice Shelf breaking up.
  20. Do you guys really believe you will see any of the white stuff settling in the SE or are you heading to East Anglia? I have great respect for some of the knowledge on these boards but everytime there has been a hint of wintry weather down South of late it's come to nothing and according to my local forecast in London it's only going to rain this weekend.
  21. First year in living memory that I have seen NO all Winter so far.
  22. I was 17 at the time and had a job at my local supermarket. I worked until 8Pm that evening and it just so happened that whilst collecting the shopping trolleys from across the road I had managed to hit the kerb with my chain of trolleys and the lead one flew off into the main shop front window making a loud cracking sound as the corner of the trolley punched a small hole in it and the glass cracked from the top to the bottom. The pane was easily 8 x 12 feet probably bigger. A glazier came around 9pm and put a small sheet of glass over the hole with the intention of replacing it in the morning and as I left the wind started to get a little gusty then and I thought that it didn't bode well for the shop window. Being a young teen boy I had a restless night and in the early hours of the morning the full force of the storm woke me up so I decided to take a walk. I really wish I had taken my video camera and in similar conditions I certainly wouldn't have gone out this day and age but it was amazing at the time feeling the sheer strength of the wind around me. Everywhere there were trees down and debris strewn over the road. I must have wandered around for an hour or so until a branch (probably a twig) hit me and I thought maybe it wasn't such a good idea to be out so I headed home. The following day I headed into work and the damage was unreal. I remember going over the railway crossing and looking down the track at some 20 fir trees laying directly across the track all the way down along the edge of the park (they were big enough to stretch across both railway tracks and into the gardens on the other side of the tracks). I got to work and wasn't suprised to see the window that I broke had been blown all over the high street. The only good news was that the shop claimed storm damage on the insurance instead of trolley boy incompetence. Yep, I have very good memories of that day.
  23. I know it's old fashioned but print screen and then pasting into paint works. Scrap that, I lied sorry
  24. So I should stop building an ark then? Thank goodness, the wife is getting a bit annoyed with the noise from all the pairs of animals I have crammed upstairs (incase the water reaches that high!).
