Stopped snowing here in Jersey for the time being and the shower activity seems to be diminishing somewhat. For the last 2 hours we have had gridlock...all flights currently cancelled to and from the island and all bus services cancelled. Thundersnow reported at the height of our whiteout too!
-
We have a whiteout!!!
-
Just started snowing here in Jersey!!! and having just had a look at the radar, lots more to come too
-
that's been downgraded big time
Have a word please mods! This is the ramping thread afterall...
The synoptics we are seeing now all add up to a classic 70s and early 80s severe cold spell with the build up starting this week with air and ground temperatures gradually falling, laying the foundations for the dumping of snow and major freeze immediately after the foundations have been layed And if you haven't witnessed one of these classic set ups and events and think you have seen the best snow ever to fall on the United Kingdom since the "classic era", in the words of Ronald Reagan (I am showing my age now ) "you ain't seen nothing yet"
-
The model runs just keep on getting better and better and better! Listen to this, Global Warming 1 - Big Freeze 2009 5! Pinch yourself please
I think my sanity will definitely be questionable if this cold spell doesn't materialise now ...
-
Could we be seeing a similar forecast to this next week???
The Beast from the East returns ...
-
Recent autumns and winters have generally been full of cold "snaps" with snow teasers, but with nothing of any significance materialising. I can't help but "feel" that due to our lack of cold snaps this autumn and what we have had of winter so far, something "major" has been brewing (since about 1987 in fact!).
Get your Blue Peter sledge instructions out, lag those pipes and hold onto your pom poms for the Beast from the East is ready to rise from the grave

Storm, what storm? I think some of us Southerners need to get a grip
-
Good evening all...bright flash of lightning just witnessed to my South accompanied by distant thunder :-) ... Had a fair deluge of rain this morning and judging by the Meteox radar, we've got more on the way...
-
yep, developing thunderstorm just off, to the west of the cherbourg peninsular...If my geography is correct that pretty near you....lightning showing up on NW radar, IOW and meteox
Your geography is spot on... ... been watching the storm develop on meteox too but it is not sure which way to go at the mo ... place your bets now ...

Hi all
I am hearing "growling" distant thunder (totally unexpected I might add) just to my South East as I type this. Feeling rather muggy here in St Helier this afternoon...
-
Hi all...just had a nice thunderstorm here but with no visible lightning and the thunder being the type that growls regularly in the distance with a few louder rumbles thrown in for good measure...good luck to those on the South coast and in South East this evening...could be very interesting <_<

Hi all...here we go again...a few cells have fired up over NW France during the last hour so fingers crossed they make it my way :-)
-
I was looking at those monster cells in France on SAT and they were clearly headed ENE so no surprised people from there missed out. As John Holmes was saying earlier, take note of the wind direction on the GFS overlay and SAT loop and avoid disappointment when things don't go your way.
Cheers for the tip weather09. To be honest, I was monitoring StormVue which at the time was showing strikes from that particular cell moving in a NNE direction before dieing approximately 35 miles to my South...will know better next time
-
So close and yet so far with that cell that was heading our way
I won't bother cranking those turbines up just yet Harry...
-
Best of luck Fitzwis! Send it our way when you are finished you ever so nice chap, lol
LOL...lets hope it makes it to us first...looking good so far on StormVue and starting to sound good now too...will do my best to crank up my wind farm and point the turbines NNE if it makes it
-
Frequent "growling" distant thunder heard to my south ... bring it on
-
I think should it swing your way towards Jersey, you'd be laughing. At present if it heads our way it will simply fade before reaching here I reckon - still, all eyes south
According to this:
http://www.cwgsy.net/private/pagea/StormVueJ.html
we are on for a collision course Good luck to you during the next 24hrs or so...
-
That really is a cracker over N France - if only it would keep its NNE trajectory and venture close to hear....even if it did it'd die before making landfall most probably!!
No no no...it's got our name on it ... NNW please with no talk of dieing
-
Now that's what I'm talking about

Hi all...not often I post on here and should do more often really. Only seem to do so when we have our weather extremes. Just wanted to say we had a lovely if not short lived storm here yesterday evening followed by isolated torrential downpours around lunchtime today. And having just checked the latest Sat24 output, there is a humdinger of a storm that has developed rapidly in the last 2 hours just to my South East...if it could only just shift a little further North and Westward...
-
Morning all...pleased to say we escaped the worst of the winds last night so business as usual today....
-
Just been outside for a cigarette in my garden. The garden faces East but I have a North and South view with the North view incorporating the local incinerator tower. It is virtually calm in the garden but I noticed the smoke coming from the incinerator was blowing due West and virtually horizontal. The tower is approximately 200ft tall but even when I went out the front into the main part of the estate that faces West, the wind is still very light...totally bizarre...
-
That really is eerie Fitzwis, judging by what is going on all around you
The wife says the winds are still getting stronger where she is near Cognac in France...
Cheers
FC
Just trying to find Cognac on the google map ...the fact that we have had a deluge of rain here all day today will make it so much easier for the expected storm to topple trees...just glad most peeps will be tucked up in bed at the time it is expected to hit...
