  1. Weather-history Interesting. Since I moved to Wilmslow a few years back we have had quite a few big storms. Seems like we rarely miss them here with plenty of thunder and lightning. Fascinating how there is such a contrast locally in terms of places that seem to get a direct hit while others only 10-15 miles away get very little. It was interesting how it was raining with thunder and lightning for quite some time here before it started at all at the football at Old Trafford. It's only 14 miles away.
  2. BlueSkies_do_I_see It's not that surprising really when you consider these past few days and next week are not a lot different to what you'd expect in a UK summer month. Minima have been in the 10-13C range and will probably continue at those sorts of levels into next week. Minima of 10C (which may be conservative for next week) and maxima of 20C would keep the CET edging upwards. We wouldn't need an extreme plume to take us past 1833 IMO. Another spell like this one could do it. A cooler spell could scupper any chances though.
  3. Another lovely day here but surprisingly not quite as warm as yesterday. I was convinced it was going to end up warmer this afternoon as temperatures were comfortably warmer this morning than the same time yesterday. Just after midday the easterly/southeasterly breeze picked up and seems to have prevented the temps rising much higher.
  4. Much warmer than this time yesterday- first 25C definitely possible I think.
  5. damianslaw Rostherne is an official site and recorded 24.1C officially. 24.2C officially recorded at Hawarden as well. Only Northolt was higher than those at 24.4C. 22.7C at Keswick. Further west 24.0C was recorded at Trawscoed. Overall the west did best today but there were also some high temps in the east.
  6. Rush2019 Probably not a lot different under clear skies given our region had some of the highest temps in the country today. There was enough sunshine to raise the temps and then it cleared later in the afternoon. 24.1C the high at Rostherne so easily the warmest day of the year so far and warmer than forecast.
  7. Summerlover2006 Same- mine is the 28th. Often seems to be glorious sunshine.
  8. WYorksWeather All it will take is another warm spell in the last 10 days of the month to take us over 14C I feel. I always feel the last week of May is one of the most reliable for weather of the entire year.
  9. Certainly not cold air in place next week. Where rain is persistent temperatures will be suppressed but if there are drier periods temperatures could still end up above average. It may be that the CET doesn't take that much of a hit next week.
  10. snowray Those temps still aren't far off average for overnight temps in May. With low pressure close by there will be plenty of cloud cover for much of the week I imagine.
  11. LetItSnow! Ah yes but it was still being played a lot in 99
  12. LetItSnow! I think I'm seeing the year through my warm biased spectacles to be honest. September was very memorable for warmth- particularly at the start- and was the warmest of the 90s. I recall getting the Internet for the first time in that October. So as well as the music- the sound of the modem dialling up is also an association I have with 1999- and the AOL "you have email" coming on every time you logged on. Pokemon on Game Boy was getting very big towards the end of the year. 'Maria' by Blondie and 'Believe' by Cher were 2 notable songs from later in the year.
  13. Yes quite a lot of memorable music that year. "Sing it Back" by Moloko and ATB "9pm" were also big that summer. Sweet like Chocolate by Shanks and Bigfoot was actually a May 99 tune, and "Every Morning" by Sugar Ray was on the radio a lot in that May. No Scrubs by TLC. Red Alert by Basement Jaxx. They don't make years like that anymore for music! I recall the very end of the month was actually quite chilly as I went on a family trip to Ireland (would have been 28th/29th May) and I actually remember feeling cold and it being a bit of a shock after what had been a warm month.
  14. A very interesting May in an interesting year. I was a bit young at the time to really recall the details but I do remember some warm weather around the dramatic Champions League final. 1999 was an interesting year in general for weather. A good summer (although August let it down a bit) and a notably warm September too.
  15. MP-R Would like to seem some stats on that- I was referring to 25C+ specifically before middle of May. Here 2016 and 2018 managed it in the last decade and we often do just as well as areas further south at this time of year. That is a minority of years.
  16. 20.6C recorded at Rostherne today- the 3rd day of the month already that has exceeded 20C. The average max there is 18.5C so far this month which is an impressively warm start.
  17. MP-R It's not common away from the South East before mid month. Yes it does happen in some years but a small minority.
  18. Weather-history The same charts showed rain across Northern England for today only a few days back. It's been completely dry.
  19. Downburst Given the ECM was showing widespread rain and showers for parts of England for today only a few days ago, I don't think we should be trusting those precipitation charts for next week.
  20. Alderc 2.0 No mention of the fact that the op is very much on the lower end of the ensembles for early next week? In terms of pressure anyway. If it ends up being further south west as was shown yesterday evening, it will make all the difference. There is still scope for that to happen. In any case it's not back to square one as someone has suggested in here- it's not exactly an Atlantic onslaught. We could well still have E/SE winds next week which is unlikely to mean constant rain for the west side of the country at least.
  21. Alderc 2.0 Or Manchester for that matter!
  22. cheese Sydney has had a rainy few years. It was only a year or two ago that they had their wettest year on record. It was 2022- they had 2530mm of rain in the year.
  23. Big overreaction from some this morning. The positioning of the low is still changing from run to run so no point jumping to conclusions yet. Only yesterday it was being shown as further to our south west which would allow warmth to continue albeit much more unsettled.
  24. Apart from June, 1993 seems like a poor summer to me. I was very young at the time so have no recollection of it. I could never be happy with a 14.6C August. It's hard to fathom a summer month that cool in today's climate. Even the poor months tend to reach 16C now. At Manchester Airport the temperature didn't reach 23C after June 30th. The highest temperature in July and August was 22.7C on August 31st. A shocking lack of warm days.
  25. reef Must be a good chance of beating 13.5C looking at the model output tonight. You'd have thought we'll be well above that by the middle of next week. I always consider the last week or so of May to be one of the most reliable periods of the year as well for warm, settled weather so we would have a chance of a notably high figure.
