WYorksWeather Good assessment- it does feel quite warm outside at the moment- in fact plenty of April days don't feel this mild. The wind is fairly light here and humidity is high. Camellias are in full bloom everywhere and the birds are chirping away. The sun has peaked out a couple of times as well here this morning and it feels very springlike indeed whenever it comes out.

February 2024 C.E.T. and EWP contests
Scorcher replied to Roger J Smith's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Yes it's certainly been a dull month here so far. February is the one winter month that can be both mild and sunny- 1998, 2008 and 2019 are the ones that immediately spring to mind. This one has been almost homogenously mild so far other than a couple of isolated colder days. It hasn't been overly wet here in the first half but only 14.1 hours of sunshine up to yesterday. -
damianslaw I always see heat in mid to late April as being a good sign for summer. I'm referring to shorter spells rather than homogenously warm Aprils like 2007, 2011, 2020. 2018 and 2003 are the 2 obvious ones. I think a lot of the classic summers do often follow an early hot spell (often short) between mid April and mid May. 1995 (early May), 2003 (mid April), 2006 (early May) and 2018 (mid April) all stand out.

New UK January and Scotland winter temperature record
Scorcher replied to MattStoke's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
@WYorksWeather If we're talking about the whole winter there's a clear winner of the most widespread warm day in winter- February 26th 2019. Widely in the high teens and above 20C in a number of places. -
New UK January and Scotland winter temperature record
Scorcher replied to MattStoke's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
@WYorksWeather yes 20C is definitely possible in any of the winter months- certainly in light of what happened in continental Europe last December/January with all-time records smashed by 4 or 5C in some places. -

@WYorksWeather and a lot higher than I and many of us expected 2 or 3 weeks back. -
New UK January and Scotland winter temperature record
Scorcher replied to MattStoke's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
@cheese it is very mild in other places further west such as North Wales- although not to the same extent. The previous record breaking day in January 2003 (in Scotland) was also unremarkable for many places. @Weather-history and 15C in Rhyl which is surprising given it's only 60 miles or so from Manchester. -
January 2024 CET and E.W.P. forecast contests
Scorcher replied to Roger J Smith's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
@Snowyowl9 Not sure how that's relevant to my point at all? It certainly wasn't cold last night. It's pretty normal for higher uppers not to be reflected at the surface in winter. And the all time UK record for January has just gone in Scotland... -
January 2024 CET and E.W.P. forecast contests
Scorcher replied to Roger J Smith's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
@damianslaw It hasn't been exceptionally cold at any stage though. No ice days here or anywhere close in the end. A couple of notably cold nights but other than that nothing particularly memorable. December 2022 was quite memorable and it was exceptionally cold for a while. It was 15.4C here the other day so you could argue the mild weather has been more notable. -
@A Face like Thunder at Rostherne yes. I can't recall too many 15C+ days in January in this area (if any). The Foehn effect isn't a factor around here which limits how high we can go normally. That said we've entered the last 3rd of the month now so slightly higher temps are perhaps becoming possible. By the first week of February we can see temps widely in the mid teens in the right setup (2004 was an example of this).

15.4C at Rostherne near me today- quite remarkable really given none of the forecasts predicted those sorts of temperatures. It also didn't really feel that mild given the strength of the wind. -
UK winters: are they getting colder?
Scorcher replied to qwertyK's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
I don't think it is snowing more in Manchester. Unless someone has some statistics to prove it? Snow still isn't common during winter. There have been some notable snowy spells in recent years but then also very long snowless periods. Even in the winters of the late 90s/early 2000s we would still usually get a covering at some point. -

Yes I gathered, but it's not exactly a standard NW/SE split when most of the south east hasn't been sunny either in the last 6 months. -

It hasn't been that sunny at Heathrow either over the past few months- in fact December was duller than here at Heathrow. September was only slightly above the seasonal average for sunshine there and October and November around average. July and August were both considerably below average but less so than here. -

Yes hard to forget that terrible July and August. September was only around average sunshine-wise in this area. Looks like Rostherne only recorded 510 hours of sunshine for the 2nd half of the year from July to December. -

Yesterday was actually the sunniest day here for some time, with 3.4 hours of sunshine. It still ended up being very wet though once the cloud returned with 11.4mm of rain in the end. The 2nd half of December was extraordinarily dull here. Only 4.9 hours of sunshine between the 17th and the 31st. Very difficult not to feel down after such a long stretch of gloom. -

What a truly horrific period of weather this has been. A long dry period is needed now. One of the most depressing periods I can remember in my life. I'm not usually a cold fan but I will take anything to break this pattern and allow the ground to dry out. The sight of my constantly waterlogged garden with a backdrop of relentless grey is hugely depressing. -

8 days ago it was glorious across Cheshire with 5.7 hours of sunshine and a max of 12.6C. It has been rather dull since though. -
Why is prolonged mild and dry so rare in winter?
Scorcher replied to Summer8906's topic in Spring Weather Discussion
Our sunniest day this month (5.7 hours) had a max of 12.6C. So mild air doesn't necessarily mean dull all the time, and colder air certainly doesn't guarantee brightness either. That cold spell last December was rather dull here mostly- we recorded no sunshine at all for 4 consecutive days between the 10th and the 13th.
