  1. A bit windy as it passed Okinawa. Pressure bottomed out at 939mb. Strongest 10 minute mean wind was 62 gusting 82 knots, but it could have been stronger between observations. 2. Resized photo -- sorry, I know the rules, doesn't pay to do things in a rush.
  3. Plenty of monsoon rain on the west coast recently. 694mm reported at Bombay in the last seven days (including 174mm and 257mm in successive days) after 365mm which fell the previous week. A total of 1059mm or nearly 42 inches in a fortnight - more than most of us get in an average year. Gibli
  4. Trevor Harley's interesting site is about British weather and Jersey is part of the British Isles, so not frustrating at all . . . Gibli
  5. . . . . . and in Greece too. Elefsis Airport near Athens reported 45.8C yesterday, which may be a new June record for Greece. Also see 45C reported in Kalamata and several other stations over 40C from the Metar reports. Even some of the islands which are normally cooled by sea breezes became very hot. For instance 38C seen at Zakinthos. It will probably be a bit cooler today with temperatures currently 32 to 38C at 1100Z. However, 44C and still rising in Sicily at Catania Gibli
  6. The monsoon is well underway in India now. 171mm of rain reported from Goa in the last 2 days (79mm and 92mm) and still raining. Daily Indian totals on the link below but note the report is in centimetres so multiply by 10 for millimetres! http://www.imd.gov.in/section/nhac/dynamic/RAINTBL.HTM Gibli
  7. As ever in meteorology it depends . . . You will have noticed sometimes how thunderstorms move up from the south while the wind near the ground is east or northeast. As a general rule rain moves with the direction of the wind well above the ground. If you look at the direction of the wind at 10,000 to 18,000 feet (700 to 500 millibars) that should give you the answer in most cases. In the short term (up to 3 or 4 hours) look at the rain movement on a loop of the 15 minute radar images if you can. Hope that helps Gibli.

  9. Another report here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/6739889.stm Chittagong Airport reporting 414.6 mm of rain at midnight last night - over 16 inches in 24 hours. No wonder its flooded. Gibli

  12. It was cold here in Jersey - the 2nd coldest May between 1894 and 2006. May 1902 - mean max 12.6C and mean min 7.2C (Overall 9.9C) May 1941 - mean max 12.9C and mean min 6.8C (Overall 9.8C) May 1996 overall was 11.0C down here, quite a lot warmer than 1902 or 1941. Gibli

  14. Pressure tendency definitions are: Rising/falling slowly - change of 0.1 to 1.5mb in 3 hours Rising/falling - change of 1.6 to 3.5mb in 3 hours Rising/falling quickly - change of 3.6mb to 6mb in 3 hours Rising/falling very rapidly - change of more than 6.0mb in 3 hours. Gibli
  15. There is some confusion over the Beaufort scale which has changed slightly over the years and yes it is very annoying to hear of force 6 or 7 gales. <<Do you know where this scale`s come from though?>> It looks like it was adapted from the World Met Organisation manual on codes, which is the current official version. Download the following (large) file and look on page 430 for the complete details http://www.wmo.ch/web/www/WMOCodes/ManualC...ol-I-1PartA.pdf To confuse things more, by convention (in the UK at least) force 3 is referred to as 'light', force 7 as 'strong' and force 9 as 'severe gale'.
