Gonna head for high ground soon and await this storm coming from the SW, good thing about September storms is that darkness is approaching already!
Where do you think the best place to be will be I am thinking of heading out to the moors above Baslow.

This looks a similar view to what I had but I may be just getting disoriented, I ended up heading up to the Peak District in pursuit of storms, only to have to rapidly turn around and head back home after seeing what was approaching.
Located myself to the East of Chesterfield and saw a good barrage of CGs on the hills towards Owler Bar and SW Sheffield.
I travelled up to Owler Bar and onto Fox House after initially positionimg myself at the top of Apperknowle.
Crazy thing was literally several hundred yards from where I started out a house was struck by lightning too.
My journey through Dronfield upto Owler Bar and Fox House was insane haven't seen rain like that for many years it went mental.
I was worried I was gonna get caught in flash flooding at one point.
And on my way back through Dronfield fromy families I couldn't get under the Bridge at the Old Sidings as it had flooded.
Not a chance I was risking going through that.

I heard a Pizza shop was struck by lightning and set on fire in Sheffield.

Decided to stay local for now I am at the top of Apperknowle Hill North East Derbyshire I have just seen my first distant flash of lightning out towards Matlock way and can hear the rumbles of thunder getting louder.
If there is anyone local I would come up here perfect viewing to the South and West over the Peaks and out towards the Dale's.

Rapid development of something to the west of Sheffield since 7:15pm. Gone very dark to my south and I think I can hear a low rumbling from that direction
Something definitely has formed can see it has gone very dark to west of Sheffield I am in the east.

That storm over Lichfield way is going absolutely insane on the lightning maps app.

We need some balance here because it does depend on where you live and what sort of views you have. I have to travel about 5 mins to get an uninterrupted view to the W/NW or N for example, but I have good views to the E/SE/S just a very short walk away (<2 mins).
It's wishful thinking to expect a direct hit everytime, it rarely happens and when reading reports on the storm section of a weather forum it can give a rather skewed picture of just how many of us are really experiencing an overhead thunderstorm.
Yes, today the storms missed Sheffield to the east but, with a decent view in that direction there was an excellent opportunity to see cg lightning as well as good storm structure. We should appreciate what we do get, rather than lament what we don't. For those with half an interest, Sheffield has done fine for storms this year - other spots have done better, some far worse
I am not saying you can't see it in the distance I mean from where I live you Could see the lightning to the east in the distance and could clearly hear the thunder but you can guarantee the majority of the storms track just east of the M1 and head north over Rotherham and North over Doncaster and out towards the Humber.

Another boring event down here.
Always the same here in Sheffield storms always go either east or west of us or have storms to the south which die out before they hit us and then storms form just to the north of Sheffield you literally couldn't make it up.
-
Predictable as ever here in Sheffield showers are forming either side of us
-
Looks like something is forming here on North East Derbyshire border just gone out in the garden winds picked up and clouding over and gone dark to my south West.
Scrap that it died out as quickly as it formed disappointing day here.

I live in Malton but work just over the other side of the moors. I’ve been caught in some really nasty storms in the past while up there.
Blakey Ridge Lion inn would be amazing views on clearest of days you can make out the power stations at Ferrybridge from up there.

I'll be heading out today. My current thinking is somewhere in East/North Yorkshire. Somewhere like York, Driffield or Pickering may be a good bet.
Sutton Bank would be a right view from up there.

Looks like something is forming over the North York Moors, and I can also see big dark Cumolunimbus clouds over towards Darlington area and just checked the radar according to that a small isolated heavy shower has broken out.
