  1. This is quite a strong arctic outbreak for the first half of October, but as a result, will be tangling with lake water temperatures that are still quite high, 13 to 17 C on the average from southern Manitoba to the Great Lakes. This tends to create squalls of all types of precip when air mass with dew point of -5 to -8 C moves over such warm waters, typically you see mostly rain at lowest elevations near the lakes, ice pellets further inland and snow on the higher ground in lower and upper Michigan and Ontario. You also can expect a fair amount of thunder and lightning in these squall bands, and the odd waterspout. With so many smaller lakes in Minnesota and Wisconsin, the air mass tends to get clogged up with low-level stratus and light flurries even if it stays clear further west so a place like Chicago would probably see mostly cloudy skies in the cold air, some clearing overnight, and I'd be expecting lows of 27-29 F in that area, but 18-20 F possibly in rural areas further west and northwest.

The fun begins late tomorrow when the arctic air arrives over the large Manitoba lakes and begins to create snow squalls around Winnipeg but as for the Great Lakes, only upper Michigan and Wisconsin get into cold enough air on Wednesday, it takes until Thursday for Michigan and Ontario, NY and PA to get into the colder air mass. Winds will be quite strong with this event, 30-40 mph generally and some gusts to 50 mph.

  2. I'm surprised the US Meteorologist only mentions 'snow flurries' for the Chicago area. Surely if these arctic winds sweep down across the Great lakes that would produce some severe heavy snowfalls due to the sheer warmth of the Great Lakes at this time of year? Lake effect snow at it's most severe I would've thought?

That's what i was thinking it would probably end up with them having some heavy falls but with the ground temps being so warm i doubt much will stick next to the lakes.

  3. Not a bad lightning display. Overall a fairly weak storm but I'd still place it 2nd best of the year. Rainfall wise nothing much to talk about 4mm over an hour period so a long way from a monsoon. Still very warm though. So if you're walking in it you probably don't mind the odd spot of rain.
    FAO The Pit:

Shows you how a short distance makes all the difference. My brother is 3 miles away in aston and had no rain at all where as my sister is 4 mniles the other way in meadowhead and has been flooded out, and so has the pub she works at on the roundabout. Both report severe CG lightning.

Only occasional lightning now and steady moderate rain.

I have the same here in dronfield 2 miles from meadowhead dronfield bottom was awash the rain was so powerful with the wind, she could not see a thing and the car was rocking it scared the living daylights out of her, i had to help her out the car it took me literally 15 seconds to get to the car and get some bags and back to the house and i looked like a drowned rat.

The lightning was amazing the forked lightning looked like it hit apperknowle hill my bedroom faces the hill, and it really did look like it did, the lightning was immense i have not seen lightning like that for about 2-3 years, when we last had 2 or 3 sever storms in a week that flooded dronfield bottom the lightning seemed constant and was lighting up our house.

the rain looked like it was going sideways the only time i have seen rain like that was in the storms of august 2-3 years ago it was like being in a tropical moonsoon.

My mum said when she was on the way to the shops, she got out the car it was so hot+humid she was sweating like mad and the next minute boom it all went mad.

the first i new of it was when my partner goes look out the window its hammering it down and i can see flashes i didn't think it was lightning till a massive bolt of forked lightning lit up the sky quite a storm we had and certainly took me by suprise.

  4. massive STORM HERE IN DRONFIELD NORTH DERBYSHIRE at the moment the rain is really coming down i have not seen rain like that in years the road was a river a minute ago its easing of a little now the rain but the fork lightning and thunder seems to be getting worse lol worst storm all season and we was not even forecast it.

If i had a camera i would be able to get some amazing shots with the lightning its like every couple of seconds or so.
