With this weather insides the best place to be upon Mendip, remember my Dad telling me that during the winter of 62/3  we were living in Shipham, and that the local authority took over the firm he was working for.  They had to clear snow by hand ,with little mechanical help ,from Longbottom right through to Charterhouse, he said that as fast as they were clearing it ,it was blowing back in .Apparently ,he developed pneumonia as a result .  Remember two  old Priddy blokes telling me years ago, the seasons on Mendip are 6 weeks in front , 6 weeks behind, and an overcoat colder. Having worked  there  during winter on more than one occasion, I can well believe it.

You've got to be a hardy soul up here that's for sure. And I'm moving higher up the hills to Priddy, got to throw in huge amounts of Mendip murk up there, low lying cloud that shrouds the hill tops.

Quite a heavy graupel shower here at the mo.

  2. Morning all, there's the odd fluffy white bit floating around in the wind here; biting wind though, making it feel bitterly cold. I have never been more grateful for lockdown and not currently working outside gardening, it's blinking freezing. Working at home hoping for snow, whilst being snug and warm is so much nicer.

Judgement on whether or not we'll all get lucky snow wise this week? I've consulted the oracle and he says odds are favourable for a bit of snow, but odds on a dumping....long shot.

  3. Morning all, nowt exciting happening here, unless you count my snowdrops in full bloom which I find exciting, they're my favourite flowers.

It's grey, damp and a bit breezy, doesn't even feel cold. I know the mad thread is ecstatic when an easterly sets in but personally speaking, they don't do a lot for me. Over here in the west we just end up grey, cold with a smidgeon of snow if we're lucky, very very rarely does it result in copious snow here. Those historic battleground events are more elusive than beasts from the east, more myth and legend than expected weather. Will this time be any different?

  4. Evening all, just been out for a ciggie.....yes I know, I really shouldn't. However, the sky's got a bizarre orange glow here, looks odd. I'm out in the sticks and we do have the odd street light through the village but not everywhere, out in the darker reaches there's someone with a really powerful torch shining it up into the sky, scanning for something. They're either on owl watch or hoping to be the first to spot a snowflake. And I thought we were bad

    Yup got three different systems.

My main one is a Davis Vantage PRO2+ and as my signature suggests is located @

    POOLEWEATHER.UK

I live on heathland so the temperature can be different to soil laden areas, and we do get the heat and cold differences to local spots.

When I saw Poole and heathland I had to check....you live just round the corner from my in laws, they're on Westham Close. Small world.

Arrrgghhh have managed to finally sell my house but now can’t find anywhere Id like to move to. Anyone know where I can look online for private house sales?  I’ve had a look at Facebook marketplace. And a look at independent estate agents.. and obviously Rightmove/Zoopla

In the same boat, there's naff all to buy round here, all snapped up in the frenzy of the stamp duty holiday.  We're going into rented, better to wait for the uptick in houses coming up for sale that usually happens at Easter than buy something that's a massive compromise.

What did the ink run out when it came to Devon & Cornwall !

Usually those systems slip south by quite a long way, hopefully that big fat blob that's modelled to bury East Anglia will slide down this way and cover right up to the tip of the Lizard.

If anyone's ever down that way, can highly recommend The Lizard Cafe down by the lifeboat station at the Lizard.

Dawn, are those buxus/boxes in the pots? They look lovely and green (although getting whiter!)

Hi Noggin, how's life treating you? All good I hope. Yes they're in pots, they're my babies, two round, two conical; I grew them from 2inch cuttings I took over 20 years ago now. I have to have a strict quarantine regime with them, always avoid them when I've been to work and never use the same tools there/here as virtually all the Box at work has been wiped out by Box Blight. I've also got Box balls in the borders, also from cuttings, a few years ago one of them was struck by blight so I cut it back to the trunk, no green left at all with the intention of removing it in the autumn. The bare trunk sprouted before I got round to taking it out, it came back clear of blight and has been thriving ever since. Phew!

Talking of work....I'm supposed to be working now doing my other job (making stuff) requires 100% focus and concentration to needle felt, working with very sharp barbed needles and snow falling outside the window is a recipe for stabbing fingers,

  9. Morning all, it's snowing here, only light but it's steady and settling. Hubby back in from his 'I'm getting some fresh air, come what may' bike ride reported a low of -3 on his garmin. Add in wind chill and his 'kin flip it's freezing' is probably fairly accurate.

Had a peek at the radar, seems this is coming up from the SW, any chance that enormous blob currently over Wales is going to slide this direction?

  10. Morning all, looking at hubby's car that he'd cleared all the snow off, we have had a sprinkling of snow overnight (he will be happy ). Very crisp out there and I really must get myself another thermometer so I can be more specific than my range of cold, f....ing cold and baltic. On that scale, I'd say it's mid way between cold and f.....ing cold this morning.

Yesterday was lovely but didn't even get to the appetiser stage of the feast we'd all like, but February will soon be here and around these parts, we never get anything worthwhile until at least late January and into February. I'm keeping everything crossed we'll get something like this before winter is done with us all.

This taken from Wells & Mendip Museum:

Priddy snowfall in 1939. The village was completely cut off for three days. Snow fell continuously for 48 hours and many houses were practically hidden in the drifts.

One or two village stalwarts got through to Wells on foot and carried back sacks of bread and other necessities, but they were up to their waists in snow in many places and many farmers worked for hours to dig sheep out of the snow.

There aren’t many times I feel like I want to live in the Mendips but today was one of them. Beautiful walk in Stockhill with hardly anyone around!

And what's wrong with the Mendips? I mean apart from the rain, the Mendip murk and fog?

I'm plotting a move to the Mendip plateau, moving to the highest village... increased snow chances has absolutely nothing to do with it. Honest Ma Lud.

Wonder if the Mendips could get a refresh.  Shower heading over there now with more to come by looks of things.

All staying to south of Bristol at moment though.

It is beginning to cloud over here now.

Just got in from a lovely long walk with the dogs, it's perfect snowman snow, very sticky, my poor old boys ended up dragging HUGE snowballs on every foot and dangling from their tummies, had to keep stopping and breaking them off.

Thawing well here, bit concerned that anything incoming will be rain that washes the snow away, not convinced it's cold enough to snow now unless it's really heavy.
