  1. Meto just issued a new weather warning for snow for Sheffield and pennine areas, from 18.00 Sunday to 12.00 Monday.

Rain will likely fall as snow to relatively low levels for a time this evening and at first tonight across parts of northern England, giving a few cms of additional cover locally. Snow should become confined to the higher parts of northern and central Wales, as well as northern England with time, leading to accumulations of 2-5 cm on some roads above around 150 m, and perhaps 10-15 cm on roads above around 350 m. Snow will die out from the north through Monday.

This looks like the main firing line, although due do pulse nature of precip coming in this evening/tonight could change a bit.

That’d be perfect for once!  Barnsley slap bang in the middle. 😁

After a low of -6.1c overnight we managed to get to the heady heights of 2.7c at 13.10 with the sun, but temps are quickly dropping back and already only 0.5c at 16.20. Dewpoint currently -1.5c so assuming we do see precip, then it should fall as snow here.

On a different subject, anyone seen or heard anything from Craigers?  He is usually active in the thread when we are likely to see some snow action, but I’ve not seen anything of him for a good while.

  3. Very cold start to the morning with a severe frost.  Most of the night temps hovered around -5c but I recorded -6.1c just after 7am, which is pretty good considering my location is semi-urban.

Snow chances for us still look a possibility over the next couple of days, and the will it, won’t it, when will it get less cold still doesn’t seem to be resolved.  Lots calling a return to mild, which it may be in the South, but my view for our region is that it will be less cold by the end of the week but not mild.

  4. A bit of wet snow/sleet mixed in with the heavier rain this morning here as well.  Hopeful  we might see some snow late Thursday into Friday but Wolds and NY Moors most likely to see the best of it.  Those of us further inland are really dependent on shower streamers setting up.

On the subject of the Mad thread, I’ve almost given up on it.  It’s mostly impossible to read at this time of year when anything wintry is in the offing.  To be honest, there are probably less than 10 members who are actually worth reading, the rest is largely ill informed speculation.

Ey up I was in Dalby this morning. Wife was doing the 10k Forest run first thing so dropped her off and drove right through the Forest up to top bit and there was still a fair amount of snow left as you say. Forest was 3.5°C yet Pickering was already up at 9°C. Heading Hartoft and Rosedale tomorrow but I think it will be more wet than white unfortunately. You should see a covering on Moors first thing Tuesday morning I reckon from that back edge snow event, not sure about HLH but you won’t have to drive far up Blakey to find some hopefully.

Haha, coincidence!  The runners were just finishing up when we arrived.  We were told all the walking trails were closed due to conditions underfoot so did the walk where the run had taken place in the morning but decided to go up to Adderstone Field in the afternoon.  There were a few people walking and cycling but it was pretty quiet up there.  We had all the gear ion so managed a really nice walk in the snow.

And yes, was looking at the system for overnight Monday into Tuesday. It’s my wife’s birthday Tuesday so might treat her to a trip over Blakey! 🤣

Seems to be struggling to settle on paths and roads tho 😑

Plenty settled on paths and side roads in Redbrook but still doesn’t seem to be accumulating particularly quickly.

Footprints and car tracks from between 7-8pm are still visible.  Given we are supposed to be under heavy snow now, according to radar, we are still only seeing small flakes although lots of them.

Temp now 0.3c and dewpoint zero, so edged back up again, and wind is starting to increase.

  7. @vizzy2004 Looks like someone has someone has come a cropper on Sutton Bank.  Earlier images showed skid marks in the snow but now the uphill camera is out of commission and I got this screenshot before they took the downhill out.  Looks like the car has hit the barrier and skewed the camera so it is now facing down.  Traffic looks bad all the way back to Helmsley!

  8. Just been back out with pooch and having had nothing on the drive at around 2pm following the melt, we now have 4-5 cm after it started to settle again after 3.30.

We’ve had a mix of heavy for a short while, moderate and currently light snow.  If we continue to get a similar mix overnight could easily end up with 10cm+ and possibly between 15-20cm by 9am tomorrow.

Temp now down to 0.1c with a dewpoint of -0.2c, so looking good for when the heavier band reaches us in an hour or so.

I'm sorry i strongly disagree, it is common sense issue. Never and i mean never was my school shut, i lived in Richmond North Yorkshire, issues were worked around, the school stayed open until parents could get there to pick up if needed, many from very rural locations. How you can close a school on the forecast it might snow is beyond me. Especially at 7am in the morning when there is no transport infrastructure issues and none likely for several hours. Yes sometimes there will be issues as you highlighted but if the majority that sway the decision. As for the teachers getting home...sorry its a place of work, everybody is in the same predicament, why are they any different??

Then we’ll have to agree to disagree.  As a manager, in this case head teacher, you have a duty of care to all, whether that is children or teachers.

As a manager in the private sector for over 30 years, I always ensured everyone in my care was able to travel and get home by leaving early.  If the weather looked like it was going to be difficult they were offered the opportunity to work from home or from an alternative office. I certainly would not, if I’d been a head teacher, expect my staff to have to walk 10 miles taking children home.

What a utter fiasco today has been in Sheffield, schools shut, parents scrabbling about trying rearrange things. And what happens?.....nothing. First schools were shut at 7am!!!, what for!!! There are head teachers in this city that should be  holding their heads in shame. I've done London and back, 2 calls in the capital and still only 8hrs work. These highly paid head teachers really need to get in touch with reality, a lot of parents have lost a lot of money due to the actions of a few.

The problem is head teachers are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.  Some parent wants their kids home whilst they can still get to school, and lets also think about teachers who also have to get home.

My daughter is a primary school teacher and a couple of years ago we had heavy snow in Barnsley and her head teacher decided to stay open, then took the decision to close at lunchtime.  By that time it was already too late and parents couldn’t get to school because the roads were utter chaos.

The result was that my daughter, along with other teachers, had to take kids to grandparents or other available carers in the absence of parents.  She then had to walk home.  Altogether she was walking in 8 inches of snow for the best part of 4 hours, and she walked almost 10 miles.

So whilst I understand frustration in some circumstances where snow doesn’t arrive and school has been closed, it isn’t exactly black or white.

  11. Looking the radar animation I think we are starting to see the pivot begin over Ireland.  The precip is still moving north east across England but there are hints in the circled area of some slight east south east movement.  A good sign because it means everything to the west is eventually heading for us! 😁

I think we’ll see continued north east movement of the precip over England for a good few hours yet, but the pivot point will start to become more obvious:as the evening progresses.

Just at Sutton Bank. Will grab some photos in a bit, had my lunch at Newgate above Helmsley nice covering up there. (Pic attached)

Back home it’s a sad state of affairs with the temperature stuck at 1.7°C with sleet, no sign of the temperature budging anytime soon and all this precipitation is going to waste.

Looks fantastic.  Will keep an eye on the Sutton Bank road camera as debating whether go to Hutton tomorrow via our usual route of A1 and Sutton Bank  or via A64 to Malton then Pickering.  A decision for tomorrow morning I think! 😁

  13. Well, that was a much better effort over the last 30 minutes or so.  Fairly heavy snow with decent sized flakes, so we now have a good covering on pavements and local roads again.

Temp has dropped further to 0.4c and dewpoint is back to zero, so any melt should now be minimised.  Looking a bit lighter at the moment but wind appears to be changing to south easterly compared to earlier when it was coming from predominately north west.
