  1. I don't see it as a "wild" assumption. I belive the universe is teeming with intelligent life. Many, far in advance of us, so obviously they will have been through this. Although that doesn't mean I believe in ufos, even were they to exist we're far too insignificant & primitive to be of interest. Anyhoo, if you need a little comforting, I'll throw in the multiverse thing. They might destroy this one, but there are countless billions of others where we'll carry on as usual. Who knows we might even find one where the UK has winters & summers  Dave
  2. I thought it was built so far underground to try to exclude as many "outside" particles as possible? Dave
  3. The thing is though Crimsone, lots of civilisations around the universe must have done this many times & the universe is still here, so I don't think there's any danger. Dave
  4. I think countryfile was there a couple of weeks ago. The sand looked so inviting. Do the shallows ever get warm enough for a paddle? Dave
  5. Obviously the beard that the rest of the team are hiding behind, you'll trouser the booty I dont doubt You're not going to shake me off that easily :o Dave
  6. Clearly a fraudulent image. probably pirated into the system by some delusional denier. Where are the water pools Jethro? Where are they :o
  7. Are you lot on the team all up to something? I fancy you're all trying to force the odds on a cold July higher so that you can all dive in & make a killing :o I'm on to you Dave
  8. Very pretty pictures GW, but apart from that what is the point? Ice & snow melt at temperatures above 0 celsius. We know that. It isn't the first time that temperatures at the pole have been above 0 & it won't be the last. Webcams now give us all the chance to see it. That's all Dave
  9. Very heartening from one as distinguished as you Jackone! Are you punting with your head or your heart though? B) Dave
  10. A very disappointing 15.2 for me Dave
  11. Great fun all of this. I really wish I could begin to understand the quantum world, but like many others I suspect, it does the old head in! I like this stuff especially as it, sort of goes towards philosophy, when you get down to the big bang. My favourite theory personally is potentiallity, mainly 'cos I can understand it I also like the theory that we are only here 'cos the universe "wanted" somebody to understand it & that's is ultimately our only purpose. Keep up the good work guys, my mind can always be a little more boggled! Dave
  12. Is all this stuff new though? How much of it is actually "unknown unknowns" as Mr Rumsfeld may have put it. You may speculate on what may or may not have happened, but it's only when you can actually measure it that you know the truth. That doesn't mean that it has chamged in any substantial way. It could be the way it's always been, but now it can be measured rather than speculated upon. Sounds like a few more grants for scientists to "investigate" these new developments & the gravy train rolls on! Dave
  13. http://nwstatic.co.uk/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif http://nwstatic.co.uk/forum/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif I changed at the last minute I had A13 typed in & changed to A12 before I hit the submit button!!! It couldn't happen could it? Dave
  14. I doubt it is possible. I read the threads & occasionally feel moved to post but rarely. There is far more heat than light generated. On here it seems to have become almost a quasi-religious thing. People argue with such certainty & refuse ever to acknowledge that someone who disagrees or challenges may have a point. I'm afraid we just end up with claim, counter-claim & then a yah boo sucks. Please keep the threads going though, just occasionally, we get a genuine head-scratching moment, that makes those of us who are open to argument think. Dave
  15. a few more Pit. heavy winds? light rain described as drizzle? (incidentally what happened to drizzle? we never have peoper drizzle these days). Black ice? ( a totally different phenomenon & quite rare in this country). Dave
  16. I seem to see many more bumble bees these days. I'm not sure I knew the difference until about 10 years ago, but now they are the only bees I seem to see. There certainly are many fewer overall. Sadly the same can't be said for wasps! I know they serve a purpose & must be preserved, but they are truly vile, nasty things whose only intention in life is to sting me! Did I mention I don't like wasps...love bees though! Dave
  17. I think the UHI is almost entirely responsible for the SE & greater London in particular dominating the recent records. I think particularly as the overnight lows are so much higher than any rural or small town location. It's very difficult for these non-urban stations to record higher temperatures in "heatwave" conditions. I've often wondered whether temperatures from the Greater London area, even from official stations, shouuld be disregarded these days for record purposes. Dave
  18. Maybe way off the mark, but wouldn't "clumpiness" in the soil indicate that something is holding it together? If you dug into soil in the UK there would be clumps in it, if you dug in the Sahara there would not. The difference ....water? Dave
  19. I'm afraid it is captain Bobski. There are now a group of people out there who are so convinced that they are right about everything that anyone who disagrees is shouted down & made to feel stupid. If you take my reply earlier which seemed to spark the contoversy. I mentioned new species evolving, which of course, they are all the time, this was pounced upon as mice with human ears growing on them. Belittling the point I was trying to make. Species evolved & died out long before man was on the scene. Were we to blame for the dinosaurs? We probably were even though we weren't there. We ouselves have only emerged in the last few million years! Of course man has had a far greater impact on the rest of the plant & animal kingdom than any other living being. Man has also done wonderful things & is trying to protect vulnerable creatures (providing they are popular of course!). I notice that you don't post as much these days & I can see why. There's not much point when all you're met with is cheap jibes & disdain. The world is a tough old place & always has been. No living being has the right to exist, including mankind. The whole thing for me is best summed up ny a line from The Simpsons, icidentally the greatest piece of TV of all time. Marge to Lisa "You look sad honey, did the last of something die?" Dave
  20. And what about all the new species that come about? That's the way of the animal & plant world. Those unable to adapt die out & others move in to take their place. You can't change nature GW. If nothing changed, evolution would ever have got going & you wouldn't be here to complain about it! Dave
  21. Very, very tricky one this. I'll go for 15.3. I think warm cloudy nights may lift fairly average daytime temperatures. Dave
  22. There was a Uk Weather Channel. From what I remember it wasn't terribly good with a lot of repitition & not much more information. If I'm not mistaken I think Carol Kirkwood was one of the presenters? I think with the 30 minute forecasts on News 24 & the advent of internet sites (NW being easily the best of course!), there is less call for a dedicated channel these days & I doubt it would be anymore succesful than before Dave
  23. I believe the universe is teeming with life. However I don't believe in UFOs. I suppose it's quite possible we're bypassed once in a million years but we're probably quite unremarkable on the universal scale & if you have the technology to travel intergalactic distances, we can't have much to show you. I suppose it might be a little like passing Slough to get to Heathrow & on to somewhere really interesting :o Dave
  24. I would go for somewhere west of the cotswolds, between Evesham down to Cheltenham, probably on Wednesday as there might be more cirrus after that. Dave
  25. Similar here Stelmer. The blossom seems particularly late this year & the trees around me are far from leafing. Maybe the warmer weather to come will see a rapid spurt. Dave
