  1. Its rare up here too tbh, we barley get decent snowfall in many parts of the north and the fact is until this week we havent done since 2000/2001 and prior to that 1997 which is the same for many parts of the south but we deal with it and yes it does cause as much havoc up here as it does in the south despite the difference in population numbers. They should keep the over-reacted media hype to "local news" rather than spam the national news.. thats just my opinion. As for the grit shortages, I suppose it doesnt help when they hammer down the grit during the milder days/nights like they were doing before this cold snap. Also what I find funny is that this week our council have actually been clearing all the paths around my area and putting grit down which they've never done before and its almost as deep in grit as the grass is with snow lol.
  2. Once you get a good few lying inches (and feet) for the best part of a week I think you only wish for more, well i do. I'd have it all year round if I could lol.
  3. "I think we're all sick and tired of the southern bias" Agree with this comment 600% Over Hyped and exaggerated on the news !! I heard on the radio last night about folk down south stranded and having to be rescued then once I returned home from work I watched the video footage and laughed my ass off when i saw the cars stranded in barely 2inch of snow if that ....on a flat road. A bit of snow and the south crumbles and all of a sudden its a major media national headline.... get real. What about the north ?
  4. Haha im only up at this time becuase ive just recently got in from work. up to now this winter has defontaly been the best one since the mid nineties without a doubt so I too want to see another good blast of the cold and hopefully white stuff. I think we could see more whether like this well into march this year .
  5. Morning crash Id have to say the odds of us seeing that ppn are next to nothing unfortunatly and our next possible event is sunday afternoon /evening where it will most likely clear from the west to east durning sunday night leaving drier weather for the time being and milder for a time. Right now its impossible to say what will happen after monday/tuesday becuase there is big difference in what 2 of the main models are showing. GFS 00z going for High Pressure and milder weather and the Ecm is going for a corker of a cold run.
  6. Yeah that cloud does seem to be thicking up and is very orange indeed. That used to be a sign it would snow. Then again maybe im just hopecasting because i certainly wouldnt mind some more of the white stuff thats for sure. Edit: Started snowing lightly here now.
  7. Lmao loulou .. this thread has been freaky today never mind the weather. I think that band of ppn over wales is weakening now as it moves NE. Probably will fizzle before it gets anywhere near us.
  8. never heard of or seen that site before but they seem to have removed the site from the www or public html directory on the server .. You can still access it on http://raintoday.co.uk Not a bad little radar that mate
  9. Sure you havent snapped some of that ruler off before inserting it ? we know what your like lol .. only kidding mate, Enjoy
  10. you sure about that ? I make it about 1 inch tops and that doesnt include the several lying inches already on the ground and the 1ft drifts here and there lol. :o ah ok sorry about that loulou, it was part of the original band of precip moving up from the south, it kind of fizzled between mine and your area leaving that blob over you by the looks of it .
  11. Not sure if you ever look at the free radars but this shows clearly why your still getting snow and probably will until after 11am :o Meteox Radar
  12. As you know Im not an expert but looking at the GFS charts id be very suprised if inland ppn turns to rain. The T850 temps remain -6 ish until atleast the early hours of monday morning which is one key factor and the surface conditions... dew points etc are supportive of snow. So yeah, those of us who get precip out of this event should see snow not rain. Thats my opinion but im sure some of the other regular chart viewers in this region will post there thoughts when they come online. How long will this snowfall last ? i just dont know atm lol.
  13. Was looking at the meto and meteox ppn radar and to me it did appear to show the front slowing down. I think the further inland (eg towards the pennines) you are, the more likely this could be prolonged through the day and I should think coastal areas such as liverpool should see something in the way of a snow showers anytime now too. Personally its not a problem if its not heavy aslong as its persistant. PS macclesfield is defonatly a nice spot for prolonged snow
  14. woohoo just started snowing here in Oldham too looks like its getting fairly heavy but fine flakes if you know what I mean. I hate to sound big headed I really do but the charts a few days ago looked as thought the ppn would miss us but i knew they would change for the better. One thing I was 100% sure about is the fact that conditions would always remain right for snow and not rain. The only thing that remains is how long this snow event lasts and how far north in our region it gets to make more of us on here happy
  15. MMMmmm looks like i was right ey ? things are defonatly improving all the time for our area and the precip is defo futher north. Wouldnt it be nice for the "snowless" Nw to steal the best of upcoming snow events hey lol. ps. Still got the juicy thick covering up here with barely any thaw. Be nice to see that topped up by a few cm before the big thaw.
  16. im gonna stick my neck out here and say i disagree with you. looked at the GFS charts HPA 800, 500, thickness and dewpoints etc and they do support snow, especially on higher ground. Maybe im wrong but I guess we'll soon find out, as you rightly say it depends if we get the precipitation, which is looking better than it did yesterday and wouldnt surprise me if things look better on the charts later today / tomorrow morning.
  17. I thinks its pointless mentioning regions as a whole because were all well aware it doesnt matter where you live in this country, it can still be hit or miss so to speak. We had very very light snow showers through out the night here in oldham and i must admit the cloud looks thick and orangy atm so Im gonna go have a peak at the ppn charts now to see if theres been any changes since yesterdays . Edit: Yep already i can see that band of ppn tomorrow has already been shifted more north on this mornings GFS compaired to yesterday and actually even Thrus/fridays ppn is look far better for the northwest. I really do think theres a good chance of decent snow showers for the north west from thursday afternoon into friday and things could still change again by that time tomorrow. Overall Im in a possative mood about our prospects for the next couple of days.
  18. Weve still got the hefty snow cover and drifts in my area and alot of the roads are still fairly dodgy. So it was defonatly a significant event for the North West... well for parts of the NW anyway. I havent been following the charts much lately but just had a quick look specially at the ppn for wednesday onwards and I personally wont be ruling out the chance of more. I dont think it would take much change in the track of ppn to give some of us north westerners more snow on thursday possibly friday.
  19. No thaw in my part of oldham although the temp has shot up fast from 0.2 to 2.2 c in the last half hour. Just so you know that snow depth is up to my knees
  20. looking at the meteox ppn radar it shows the band of precip over us thining out about now but then starting to build up again just to our east at 22.30 so with any luck well see some of that through the night. Flakes are starting to get bigger again here
  21. Hahaa no need to tell me twice, I can bet any money the bosses will "make it into work" and will be very happy to hear my voice on the phone saying Snowed in under 1 ft drifts . We had a bloke phone in last night who was snowed in with 2cm of snow, god help him tonight lol
  22. Well its still snowing moderatly, temp is a solid 0.1 c and can no longer see where the roads and paths are and theres that many drifts up to my knees that I can't decided whether to walk to work in it or not bother tonight, dont fancy a 45 min walk down to work then another 45min walk home, what do ya think ? .
  23. Yep pretty much the same up here in oldham roughly the same depths lying with drifts easily over 10 cm, alot of roads closed, ive even see 1 abandoned and 1 that had just had a minor crash and the main roads are not too clever either but thats to be expect when the wind blows fresh snow over the roads that have already been gritted. The councils have defonatly got there work cut out this week to keep even the main roads open lol. Defonatly starting to feel more like the snowy weather of the nineties and even better if it does carry on for the next few days
  24. Well I have to say This morning feels like one of the coldest so far this winter. Its cloudy and foggy with a pretty hard frost here. This wind chill is absolutly biting more than it has as of late, so much so I took the dog out and had to dart back in quickly to put extra layers on and my hands were numb within a few minutes of going out which I find quite strange considering yesterday mornings NW forcast on the home page. Yes its gusty out there but very very cold and theres no sign of any rain or dampness yet here in my part of the northwest, just a biting wind fog and heavy frost.
