  1. I'm not sure how much rain we've had, quite a lot last night, but it has really eased back this morning. Temperature did make it to 3.8C a couple of hours ago, but has since fallen back a couple of notches to 3.6C.

As you say MIA if this was January and the continent was very cold, we'd be knee deep in snow today.

  2. Avoid Telford and Shrewsbury like the plague then. Look in south Shropshire, the further south the better if you want better summers but in the middle of the hills for snow (Try Snailbeach for example, 350m high but only 10 miles from Shrewsbury).

Church Stretton might be an idea. That's the town at the botton of the Long Mynd and in a great location if you like walking. Another contender is Bishops Castle- very picturesque, higher up, own brewery, beautiful location, definitely more 'remote'. What more could you want ...

  3. The highest ones (Long Mynd, Stiperstones and Clees) yes, but only on the tops. They're certainly not covered all winter, though 20-30 days is common. It's not so much that they get many more days with falling snow, just that it takes longer to melt up there. 2013-14 was exceptional though, they only had a couple of short lived coverings.

I think they do get more significantly more days with falling snow. Quite often we have sleety rain or just cold rain, but Titterstone Clee and the south Shropshire hills, both of which I can see from my house, are white.

I've certainly been on the Long Mynd and Tittersone Clee when it has been snowing, but just rain in the valley.

  4. Rain cleared by 8 or so this morning. Mostly a dullish morning. A few bright spells this afternoon with some blue sky and sun, but also a couple of light showers. Skies now looking to clear and temp falling back, currently 6.1C.

  5. That has been known for some time I think Knocker. It seems to be linked to the mercury mining ongoing in the Amazon basin - a lot of water is needed to extract the mercury. The contaminated water then gets washed back into the Amazon which drains into the Atlantic where it contaminates the tuna.

The mercury is mostly being used for the manufacture of low energy lightbulbs. Now there's a good idea to save the planet, or maybe not?

  6. Will be starting after tea walks with dog if this carries on ,which is likely !!.

Yep, the evening dog walk has already moved from 4 to 5pm. There was even some glimmers of light at 6pm here this evening despite all the cloud. Love it when I can walk the dog at 8 or 9 in the evening - great chases to be had in the fields around that time.
