  1. Chris Fawkes on BBC News channel just said a Met Office Amber Warning is currently being written for tonight/tomorrow's rain for areas around Durham, Middlesbrough and North Yorkshire.
  2. Amber warning on its way for North East England for tonight/tomorrow's rain.
  3. NAE has the rain intensifying slightly as it passes to the east during tomorrow, which explains why the GFS is picking up higher totals in the east: EDIT: Having said that, the precipitation accumulation totals for the next 48 hours is still greater in the north and west according to the NAE, apart from a little patch on the south coast. Cumbria/North Wales and western Scotland look set to get the most rain.
  4. According to meteorologists on local news channels over in the states, landfall is expected sooner than previously forecast, at roughly 9-10pm UK time.
  5. Unfortunately charts from T384 are completely useless when the position of this week's low pressure changes with every run! Impossible to say how things are going to pan out further down the line at this stage. At the moment it looks like a wet and windy period for the UK with areas of rain and strong winds passing down from the northwest from late Tuesday onwards. The low pressure hangs around for a long time with further periods of unsettled weather moving across the country before the system eventually clears to the northeast next weekend.
  6. Can't quite believe how persistent the rain has been over the past 48 hours. I'm in York and it's been raining constantly since about 10am yesterday, only briefly stopping overnight to become constant and heavy once again today. The rain just seems to be lodged over us as the system rotates; it's still coming down heavily here, the River Ouse in the city centre is 3.17m above normal and isn't expected to peak until tomorrow! Looks like a few unfortunate people are going to have their homes flooded. Take care everyone.
  7. Rain appears to be moving through quite quickly. Was this always meant to happen or is more going to develop in the North Sea as the day goes on?
  8. Constant, heavy/torrential rain here in East Yorkshire. Looks to be a bit of a clearance on its way from the east though and areas to the north of here (North Yorkshire and the North Yorks Moors) could take the brunt.
  9. Snowed moderately here since about 3pm, lighter snow before that from 1pm. We've had a few cms in that time so am surprised by the reports from some members of a few inches in their area - looks like some people have done very well!
  10. Still snowing moderate to heavy here in Pocklington - a decent covering on cars and in places where snow had disappeared off the roads. Adding to the fair amount that was already left over from the weekend though! I haven't seen the forecast or looked at charts today but is this meant to be heading southwest towards the Midlands? I presume there's going to be some SW movement at some point then?
  11. Snowing moderately in Pocklington - hope it doesn't turn to rain!!
  12. The precipitation - whatever it turns out to be - looks like being across the region for approximately 6 hours judging by both the GFS and NAE... whether it's rain or snow we'll have to wait and see. Perhaps a more experienced member could give us an idea on where in our region is looking good for snow and where is looking marginal? I'm in East Yorkshire and we've always been forecast to have a decent period of snow but we're on the very edge of the main area, so some reassurance would be nice!
  13. (This is in reply to Sparky too, sorry)... The latest 12z NAE looks good for snow prospects, especially across southern Lincolnshire where I don't think you have much to worry about at all. Think about us further north who are much more on a knife-edge as to whether we see rain, sleet or snow!
  14. Take my hat off - you were right! Looks like some areas up here could get a decent covering tonight. Hopefully some more snow showers will pop up and head in the direction of York soon! Good luck to you as well for the next few days
  15. We've been staring at precip out there all day! A small proportion has reached a little inland but it's all been on the light side. Don't hold much hope for what's developing out there at the moment!
  16. GFS 12z rolling out now and it appears to be better for snow lovers across our region with the precipitation moving in slightly later and the snow risk extending a little further west. Must remember it's only one run though and there's still a long way to go before we know exactly what's going to happen... and that may well not be until the event is right on our doorsteps.
  17. Yeah I'm not entirely sure what's happening. The Met Office's twitter page says they're having some difficulties getting the warnings up on the website but as far as I'm aware they're the same as the ones that were temporarily visible earlier on.
  18. They're having 'technical difficulties' with the website apparently...
  19. Yeah they do appear to - definitely a case of the further east and south you are the better chances you have of more prolonged snowfall.
  20. Yellow alert issued now for most of the region - western areas on Saturday evening and more southern and eastern parts of Yorkshrie and Lincolnshire for Sunday morning. Good video from a Met Office deputy chief forecaster issued here:
  21. You can have blizzards with very light or no precipitation, if the wind is strong enough and there is already lying snow, that can be whipped up and cause blizzard conditions as if it's snowing.
  22. From what I can remember, it showed all snow, but Paul talked about a "freezing rain, sleet and snow mix".
  23. The latest forecast on the BBC News channel looked a lot more promising for us as well. Snow tonight for our region rather than the horrible "wintry mix" and then a bit more snow pushing southwards during tomorrow.
  24. Do we think tonight's snow is going to be a region-wide affair, or is it possible only western areas could be affected? Sorry to have to ask instead of being able to contribute.
  25. Well, BBC Weather are currently suggesting 5-10cm widely just from the snow coming down from the north on Tuesday, with up to 15cm in some areas. Then there are also snow showers possible for the rest of the week. But anyway, predicting the quantity of snow is very difficult until very close to the time, we should just be grateful we have snow!
