A friend has sent this picture (and given her permission for me to post it on here). She describes it thus: "I always have a saucer of water out for the birds. It froze overnight last night and this weird ice column is rising from it. It is hollow in the middle."
She (and I) would love to have an explanation of why this may have happened. She lives in north Hampshire and her garden is quite large and surrounded by open countryside. If anyone can help, we would both be grateful. If you need any further information, please let me know.

Thanks for that link, cookie. Had a mail from my sister who lives a few miles outside Malaga earlier today mentioning it. I shall pass the link to her and, as she speaks fluent Spanish, she will understand all the text as well as the pictures!

This sunset photo was taken from the 19th floor of a building in Croydon in October 2007. The photographer, a friend of mine, is wondering what has caused this apparent show of three suns. Is it simply a trick of the light/dodgy reflections in the office windows, or is there another explanation? he has worked there for several years and seen many sunsets, but never anything like this before or since.
Any possible explanations would be gratefully received.

Today.....956 at 14.00
For the dates Terminal Moraine has given..
25th Feb '89....below 950, possibly around 947
17th December '89...955
25th January '90...954
30th October '00...968
The first three were recorded in mid Bucks, the fourth one here in Dorset.
The other low one is, of course, the '87 storm where my low, again in Bucks, was 950.

Heavy rain and strong winds throughout the night. 24.5mm to 08.00. Sunny and breezy now, but clouds gathering again as I type.

Lovely sunny morning here, clouded over around 11.00 with a squally hail/sleet shower shortly after midday. Temperature has been up to 10C, but now dropped back to 7C.
