  1. Good evening, Nimiblus. I think a heavy night of wind and rain ahead. Strong to gale force winds being over the south coast., then blustery showers being the main until this what I would call an unprecedented LP moves NE. Sunday looks more settled with warming and more settled but back to square one again come Monday afternoon. Phil.
  2. September 7th 2009. I was in Exmouth. (Sandy Bay) Just watching the sea mist roll in. From 21ºc to 12ºc in the space of an hour was unbelievable. As I type, Heavy rain and wind speed in excess of 30Mph. Not very mid-July-like! Phil.
  3. Oh I don't know, Sammie, you have already mentioned that you are fizzed-off with your feroucking lack of storms. You know... Apart from Andy Murray... I like this Scottish one! (We empathise together... NOW BRING ON THE BLOODY STORMS!!) -------------------------- Could do a Big Brother (Why do I bother) ... Day 2 : "Looked out of window. Bit cloudy at 07:00am. At 12:00pm, there was some big cauliflower cloud things building and at 1:20pm, this big cauliflower thing came over and wee'd on my garden. Like a hosepipe without a nozzle for a minute at one point. Three twenty five : More raining cauliflower cloud! Then by five thirty, all gone. LIVE UPDATE : Ten fifty seven PM : It's persisting down from that unelectrified lump of PPN over Wales. Windy too. -------------------------- Is this really mid July?? Phil.
  4. If memory serves, Twister2005... It rained throughout much of Summer 2007. 2008 was not much better. Went on a holiday to Exmouth in September of that year and could still see the flooding in Gloucester. Large fields were like lakes. (2007 also!) Walking, as I like to do from Sandy Bay, Budleigh Salterton into Sidmouth were not a walk as such, but a squelch under you feet. As for St Swithin's Day for Scotland and Wales in particular... It may be wet if legend has it! Phil.
  5. Sammie, Sammie, Sammie... *Hugz* I know the feeling. So near, yet so far away. Someday, your storm will come. You can't say that!! Or else Storm Chase 2011 will be a letdown for our distinguished and brave NW members who venture out into the danger. (Or else there will be more profanities on vid/Youtube than there were in Storm Chase 2009. You know who you are when that lightning bolt hit that pylon!) Right then... Today as a whole : Two short and sharp torrential rain showers. Thunder has been zilch. I'm joining Sammie in the curl up and rocks back and forth. Anyone over 30? Remember Val Doonican on his rocking chair on a Saturday night on the BBC? But I'm not singing sheitte. "I want a thunderstorm... Can't see any at all, Weatherman said, storm we dread. Got no thunder, But a deluge instead." I hate this low pressure! Phil. (Just to let you know that Val Doonican with his stoopid jumpers back in 1970's and lyrics above were not his own... But mine!)
  6. Impressive panoramic pic of the supercell. IN ENGLAND?? If Paul were still running the pic of the month competition, I'm 100% sure that image alone would have won hands down. (Pic of the YEAR even!) Impressive vid from Weather 09. Thanks for sharing mate. Now as for the streak that appears at around 30 seconds... Definitely NOT a bird, (unless it was flying through it and left a natural chemtrail of its own) So that cancels that theory out. I had initially thought about it being a car or motorcycle lamp reflection on the camera lens, but that wouldn't explain why it disappears above the scud, so that cancels that theory out too. I'm not sure if it is ball lightning as during the research I've done, ball lightning tends to take a more jagged path and is usually slower than the vid suggests. So maybe cancels that theory out. Only person who would probably be in the know would be Stuart from TORRO. (If he still posts on here?) Who knows otherwise? Phil.
  7. Doesn't feel like the middle of July at all. What a difference a few days make. Breezy here, had two short, but torrential showers. (No thunder, quellé surprise! ) Mind you, the impressive sight of towering Cu's is all I can really make any positive comment on at this time. Phil.
  8. I can, but only sympathise, Sunlover. I remember in 2005 when on a hot and humid day, thunderstorms were developing readily over Solihull, moved north into the Yorkshire/Pennine regions and all hell broke loose in those same areas come evening and overnight. I remember being told off the following day by an ex-member on here who lives in Sheffield that it was the scariest and most vicious storm she had ever witnessed in her life. Well, we in Solihull aims to please. But the irony was that I only saw the back end of the developing Cb's and saw or heard... NOTHING!! Looks like the 'Solihull Shield' has returned in 2010. (Or at least since 2nd May. Mother Nature's 40th Birthday gift to me... A storm shield!) Phil.
  9. Many more non-eventul days like today and I think I might join you. Phil.
  10. Well, yet another non-event for Solihull while most other parts of the country were having all the fun. Only thing worth making any note of (if even that!) was a widespread anvil about 20 miles to my east at around 6:45pm, then more large and dark Cu's came overhead shortly after that. By 7:15pm, I had my camera at the ready thinking that it was all going to kick off at last. Rain shafts could be spotted moving rapidly over my way. So what happened? Nothing of note. Just 20 or so minutes of moderate rain, no hail, no thunder, no lightning, no diddly squat! Checked the radar as the shower began to clear and that same anvil I mentioned earlier looked as if it had intensified. Just my luck! So peeps, looks like I'm here for a little while longer. Phil.
  11. It's now been just over two months since I've seen a storm, be it distant or overhead. This time last year, I'd already seen four of them. Looks like this coming Thursday may provide something of a atmospheric pyrotechnic nature, but then I'm not holding my breath and also still a little too early to speculate where and when. (Or if!) But let's not give up hope eh? Phil.
  12. Or in my case... An intra-cloud lightning, thunder crackling, half inch hail, stair-rod raindrops. Oh what a way to end your 3rd decade. Into my 4th and no bloody storms!! Life begins at 40, atmospheric activity has retired! Sheesh! Phil.
  13. *Hugz for Sammie!* Seems like there'll be plenty more of those going on given the current no storms rate. Show us the Spanish plume and the Bay of Biscay LP that pushes all of the thundery activity over the UK!! Last observed in proper in the Midlands : Early July 2005. Late afternoon and evening storms + convection prevailed from an occluded front moving north/north east. Still, early July. Never say never! Phil.
  14. I prefer Chess. The mind game, a bit like watching the weather forecast really. Check : Cheltenham and the south east will see a storm this week. I don't see that happening somehow. Checkmate : Ha!! METO messed up again! (Circa 2009 with the BBQ Summer...) Um?? 'Hottest Summer on record'... (Circa 2008) Uh?? Quite wet! 'Warmest Summer for decades'... (Circa 2007) Eh?? A superlatively wet one, especially late July/August! Phil.
  15. Taken on Saturday 3rd July 2010 at 21:05 Phil.
  16. You might be in luck if it follows mine, AJ. The evening before my 40th on 1st May 2010, there was an unprecedented storm. (See my sig!) You just never know! Phi.
  17. Oh and Jane, here's that cup of tea, with free digestive biccy that you requested earlier in this thread... Sorry that it's not a 'Storm in a teacup!' Phil. (Sorry for the pun!)
  18. Ok, if overhead, then that theoretically counts as a storm. (So what are you doing here then?? No Storms Club members only!) But I'm waiting for this club to be influxed by those in the SE who were yet again, and to quote a Billy Fury song... "So near, yet so far away!" Phil.
  19. Where are you based, Liam? Add to your location so we can define as to whether a thunderstorm or not. Was it overhead? Visible Cloud-Ground or Intra-Cloud lightning will count as long as near overhead, or by a two or less mile radius, then you have had what we declare as a storm! But Coast and Harry, they get special dispensation. Not like the 1990's anymore when we in the Midlands were jealous of you lot down there in the SE! Phil. (Oh how the tide turns... But if SE or Midlands are getting none, or ChelteNaaaaam, nor Moanchester... Then who bloody is??) I demand an inquiry!
  20. That, Donna M, is usually a forerunner of a thunderstorm not too far away. Now when those clouds get more wavy in shape and darker, and become more uniform behind... Then you know that a thunderstorm is very close. Otherwise in definition, showing atmospheric instability. Anything goes, especially with a slow moving cold front to dislodge moist and humid air. Phil.
  21. Wait for the influx from Coast and Harry, and all who live, or around the Sussex/Kent coast in the early hours.. Only chance I see is the major Cb explosion going on in mid-France as I type and maybe, just maybe, clip the far SE of the UK?? Please let us know guys. Best of luck. Phil.
  22. Definition of a storm to enter the club... 1, Distant thunder does not necessarily constitute a proper thunderstorm, unless overhead lightning, IC (Intra-Cloud) or GC (Cloud-Ground) is observed inside a two mile radius. If both apply, then no venture here. But still free to comment on whatever you like though. 2, As I have observed myself in the past and more than once, A Cb anvil hanging directly overhead, but not the cloud base where distant lightning can be, but not necessarily be visible. But if accompanied by loud thunder and any sort of precipitation, you're out. Low and distant rumbles, or what would be called a 'Dry Storm' even if any precip occurs, you're in. 3, Shelf cloud or visible scud means you're too close, so no-no!! And no saying well it hit us for a minute. We're talking proper no-storms here. (Been there enough times and I don't even live in Cheltenham!) Of course Jane can change the said above rules. (I'm only the lackey here. I pour the cups of tea! But priviledged at that!) Phil. (Now let's empty this club by October 2010!)
  23. I have to agree with you, Jane. But hey, all of July and August, even into September to go yet so never give up hope. :-) Welcome Harry. Pull up a chair and discuss the tales of woe stormwise. I thought I heard thunder on Sunday afternoon but was probably the sound of several TV remote controls being thrown at the same time nationwide at final whistle. (But don't get me started on that England debacle!) Otherwise... We could have a busy Summer on here, Jane. Hopefully not as I want to see all witness a good storm at some point. But here we are if need be, all welcome. :-) Phil.
  24. Good morning to all at the NSC, Call me cynical, But the hottest day of the year (Wimbledon and Glastonbury both dry?? Try 24th June 2005 when wet as f.. You know the rest.! ) As I am presuming, someone, somewhere could well see a storm today. Synoptic situ.... Slow moving and rotating LP to the west of Scotland drawing in a plume of moist and humid air. Futher thundery rain over southern France heading N-N-E so if I'm right, should maybe clip the south east by around midnight, if not before. And if not, blame the Belgians!! But seriously. Anyone, anywhere could see a storm spark off. I watched with interest yesterday of some dodgy looking Cu's but were inocuous. Good luck peeps.
  25. I hope you're right NadamataSam. I'll be watching exclusively with the GFS/METO data. What me and Jane Louise want to see is all with a storm or three. I'll happily leave this club if such an event happens. Good luck to all. Not since August 2005 have we had a decent storm, in Solihull anyway! But 1st May 2010 was some form of recompense. (Not quite the make up, but better than nothing!) Phil.
