  1. I would agree, Ian. May 1992, June 1981, July 1982. (Showing my age now. Wooot!!!) August 2003 Great years for storms. July 1982 When mid-day turned into midnight at 2pm. I really wish I had pics of that event. So surreal. Phil. Let's hope, Weather09. And if so, Jane, you'll have to run this thread on your own for a while. Or if we both get storms, could re-name it the YES Storms club 2010. Phil.
  2. Well just watch a World Cup game and you can theoretically hear millions of them. Phil. (Ban the Vuvuzela!)
  3. Blimey!! Funny how Glastonbury is remembered for anything but the music. 24th June 2005 : Mud, torrential rain and thunderstorrms spring to mind. I wasn't there but I watched the ITN news reports that evening. And now a dust devil. Watch from 47 seconds to 1 minute 9 seconds to see two gazebos literally torn apart. :-o Phil.
  4. Sky? Here in Solihull, it's still semi twilight even at 10:30pm. But don't forget, it's also a good time to look out for NLC's (Noctilucent Clouds) Phil.
  5. No problemmo. You are spot on mate as a slow moving warm front moved north east with very heavy rain and mud bathed Glastonbury had just begun. (It was a Friday and I've never been so soaked in all my life walking such a short distance from corner shop back home). We, Jane Louise and Phil UK hope all in the UK see a storm or two over the Summer months. Only club I've ever joined where I wish we had NO members. But, and I'll say, and on behalf of Jane no doubt that we wish you would leave us and see your own storms and report into the relevant sections of this forum. Any pics or videos taken would be a bonus. Also. And as I'm sure Jane Louise would also agree... No need to ask permission to join. If you feel storm deprived, then please feel free to join. Membership totally free and we look forward to any input of the tales of woe/joy. In the meantime, best of luck and let's see what the rest of June/July/August/September has to offer. Phil.
  6. You're more than welcome to join, StormMad26. I'm glad you mentioned 15th June 2009. I completely forgot that it was also on the same day that we in Solihull had our most severe, and longest lasting thunderstorm of the Summer. 1 year ago. Gosh! Convection fired up early and by 12pm, there were already visible Cb towers in sight. Then at 2:15pm, all hell broke loose and lasted for a good hour and 15 minutes. As for the last Spanish plume I can recall, I'm going back nigh on five years and I remember this distinctly because it was the same day that there was the Battle of Trafalgar celebrations going on in Portsmouth. (28th June 2005). The day was hot and oppressive but by late afternoon, the skies darkened rapidly and the lower base cloud structure was evident that there was a storm nearby, and sure enough, less than half hour later, it all kicked off. Not seen anything of the like since. Phil.
  7. Of course you can. I have me a feeling that there will be a few more members, ex NSC members and new ones joining up before the Summer is out. Phil. Thanks for your input, Ian. I do remember the latter half of that Summer (1992) being excessively hot with temperatures exceeding 30ºc on a number of days during the month of August. Phil.
  8. Was it Paul "Shermy" Sherman who said last year that you'd not see your next storm until 2015? Well, he was half right, half wrong. You DID see a storm so Sheeeeeeeeeeer to Shermy. But in his defence, not the real daytime and overnight storms that last several hours when occuring from an occulded front approaching from France. (1992 springs to mind) Not seen anything like it since. But Jane bab... This could be our year. It's already unsettled and still only early June, reminds me somewhat of 1995 so anything goes. (Can TWS (Ian) claify this please mate if possible?) Phil.
  9. I did watch that documentary also on Channel 4. Was very interesting indeed and it does beggar belief if what does happen with Katla ("IF" being the provocative word!) But something else I want to know. How the heck did the narrator manage to say in pure perception several times the name of the volcano currently farting its lot? I couldn't even pronounce it, let alone spell it! Phil.
  10. You do, Stu. Snowstorms so give us our six months of revenge. Phil. (Not affiliated with this part of the NSC!)
  11. I called them some 15 minutes ago, Sprites. NOAA are speeding their way over here as we speak. Apparently, they've never seen anything like it. Even their own recorded weather doesn't go back that far. Phil.
  12. That'll keep Harry quiet for a bit. Phil.
  13. That's true, Sprites, but I can't see that front coming too far inland. Same happened in May 2005 when out of nowhere there were high level based Cb's during the early hours and went up as far as the Midlands, Wales. (Guess who slept though it all? Moi! ) Phil.
  14. Old folk lore... When Seagulls fly low, expect cold and snow. When Seagulls fly high, bright sunshine in sky. My Dad taught me that when I was about 5 years old. And you know, more often than not, it rings true. As regarding that load of PPN currently over France/English Channel, as said in the NSC thread. I think maybe, just maybe some night lightning could be observed from Portsmouth to Sussex coast. Given that the English Channel is still pretty cold at this time of year then most of it will dissipate as it heads north. Sorry to be a killjoy but I've seen the same happen in many years. Now if it were late July/August then that might be a different case scenario. But then, you just never know!! Phil.
  15. As much as I'd like to say, Jane, I don't see the heavy and potentially thundery PPN making it much further north than the south coast and by then if recent history is to go by, most, of any thundery activity will have died out by the time it crosses the English Channel. Best bet will be to watch from, say Portsmouth, Weymouth, Poole and eastwards along up to Sussex coast for any coastal horizon lightning. That said, who knows? But tracking what's brewing will miss Solihull and western areas by a country mile. (So here I remain! ) Phil.
  16. Don't hold your horses yet. Some pretty interesting stuff on radar invading the English Channel. But as of the past two/three years, may well dissipate before heading inland due to still cool Channel waters. But you never know. This is a very complex LP And thank you, Jane Louise. (Shuggee too!) We'll keep these members most welcome. I've seen some storms before, but have not seen a good night time storm since 24th July 1994. There was one on (distant but IC lightning) Saturday 5th June 2010, but I must have slept through it. (Again! Same as early May 2005) ARRRRRRGGHHHH! But welcome all, on behalf of myself and Jane Louise. Please feel free to gripe, moan, create your own static electricity experiments... Or when I was a kid, use a thin metal sheet and wobble it whilst switching a lightbulb on and off. (Not the real thing but it makes you feel close to one... When you were just a kid! ) Phil.
  17. Myself and the very lovely Jane Louise have combined together (Not that way!! It's a long trek to Cheltenam... 61.5 miles I think from Solihull?) Basically saying that now she's had her first storm since 1843, (And mine was 1st May 2010) We've decided to combine forces to keep this NSC thread, and future ones running and to help out and sympathise with all those who do not receive any storms this year. As an ex moderator on here once upon a long ago, plus a long time weather enthusiast. I can fully understand the frustrations sometimes when all looks perfect, but comes to nothing. So basically, if she gets more storms than me in 2010. I take over.* *Not the agreement but... Thank you, Jane Louise. xx Phil. (Her abiding assistant!)
  18. I generally agree with some things that you say, PP. But as I heard a couple of days ago on Channel 5 news that President Obama said he'll kick his ass. (BP chairman) I'm quite sure at this moment in time that those in Louisiana would like to kick Obama's, and his predecessors. But you know what the biggest irony is?? Let me tell you. That oil rig was built by an AMERICAN company, and whoooooooooooo has in the space of two days in Texas and nearby had gas pipe explosions?? Mmmm!! Food for thought. Phil.
  19. Blimey!! This is almost like Groundhog Day Pt III Dull and damp but a more humid morning, but will there be massive convection later on when the sky clears? (Watch this space!) Ok. So currently in Solihull, we have... Current temp : 13.1ºc Dew Point : 12ºc Humidity : 94% Wind Speed : 4.6Mph from the NNE Overall conditions : Overcast. Low level stratocumulus. Phil.
  20. Harry. I'll be very surprised if someone, somewhere doesn't at some point later on this afternoon/evening doesn't witness a thunderstorm, even if just scraping the Kent/Sussex coast. I've been watching that what seems to be a near stuck LP over Biscay over the last day or so and it has barely moved. Caused torrential downpours, storms and flooding over Spain, Iberia and a good part of France. Now I think it has, at least part of the UK in mind. Latest satellite image already looks like an arm of PPN is heading over the Channel. What happens then? Who knows?? Phil.
  21. (In the voice of Jack Nicholson...) "HERE'S PHILLY!!" Disappointing couple of days so Jane, can I rejoin puleeeze!?! You know what makes it even worse? All that convection around mid afternoon/evening that looked like five Mount Everest's were sitting up there, pileus and anvils... Yet apart from two very distant rumbles of thunder and 1 hour and 15 minutes of torrential rain... (And I mean torrential!!) Bugger all in sferics. Always wanted an outdoor swimming pool! And I've sent you a PM too. Phil.
  22. A one hour and 15 minute torrential rainstorm (And I mean Torrential with a captial 'T') But alas, no thunder at all. That same streak of PNP that got stuck over the Birmingham area was disappointing, if not created the the biggest puddles I've seen for some years, so I suppose at the end of it, I could have had a new and naturally built fishpond. (See pic below!) But was some really torrential stair-rod rain that I've not seen in years, especially in the duration which was around 1 hour and 15 minutes. But no thunder or lightnighnig at all. (Jane Louise, I'm coming back! ;-) ) Some pics though. Tuesday evening, this thing seemed to stick around in the sky forever! My turn now maybe? Errm... No, as it turned out. Now some lucky git is getting drenched. Wednesday 9th June 2010... Nice sky. I wonder what Stourbride looked like when this behemoth passed over. Blizzards. ;-) That's looking over your area, and north of Birmingham at the time. But not quite done yet... Yikes!! Phil.
  23. Looks like the East and South East of England could well be seeing all the atmospheric pyrotecnics at some point today, and possibly well into dark as well. http://www.sat24.com/Region.aspx?country=fr&sat=ir&type=loop Good luck. Phil.
  24. Hi Blizzards. Just watching the back end of that which is over you, probably still as we speak. It passed over Solihull a few minutes ago and looks even more sinister than when it was above my head. Moderate rain mostly but could see more intense rain shafts to the East which is where I also heard a couple of distant rumbles of thunder. A complete contrast to yesterday when some massive Cu's looked almost (again to my east!) stuck in the same position for a couple of hours. But still a good 2+ hours before sunset so who knows what may come about. Incidentally, and I'm really peed off about this. There was a night-time storm with IC lightning not too far away from me over the Birmingham area on Saturday 5th June 2010 but I either didn't see it or hear it, or I fell asleep. (Also happened in May 2005, but again, asleep!) ARRGGHHHH!!! Phil.
  25. "Jane Louise" and "I got my storm" do not fit in the same sentence. But congrats anyway and about bloody time too. Here in Solihull, what looked like a dead cert for a storm turned out to be a false dawn with only heavy rain but could hear very distant thunder to my north west. Does this mean then that new NSC ownership is coming? Phil.
