  1. Looks like after all the exploits of last month here (7 ice days, 21 air frosts, 13 days of snowfall) we are going to end up with the complete opposite in what is on average a colder month (0 ice days, 1 air frost, 0 snowfall). Doesn't last month feel like last winter? Not complaining though as the garden is growing like crazy Could do with 10c+ again though Whats this hurricane Tuesday chat about?
  2. raining nicely here in Bedfordshire. Am I alone in hoping for an early Spring now? B)
  3. Experience has told members that this will be rain. The latest TV forecasts which run off the NAE will also confirm this later. A lot more rain on the +18 (was +24) chart than earlier http://expert.weatheronline.co.uk/daten/proficharts/en/nae/2010/12/27/basis12/ukuk/prty/10122806_2712.gif Also temps too high (for accumulations) http://expert.weatheronline.co.uk/daten/proficharts/en/nae/2010/12/27/basis12/ukuk/tmp2/10122806_2712.gif - coupled with the fact that NAE forecast temps have also been about 2c too low - i.e 1C predicted today but has been 3C. the 48 hr precip totals indicates a lot of rain (10mm+ for some) http://expert.weatheronline.co.uk/daten/proficharts/en/nae/2010/12/27/basis12/ukuk/rsum/10122912_2712.gif So those who still have snow get your last few looks at it before it gets washed away. :smiliz46: Agree 100% - the only way the temp would fall is if the precipitation is very heavy.
  4. Many places just edging above 0C now - in theory it should stay around the 0-1C mark for the next 48 hrs. One interesting observation on another site is that ground temperatures are still a couple of degrees below freezing while about 1m above the ground its -1C, 0C at 2m, and even at 3m its already +1C. The upper air itself (many many miles up and where the precip falls from) is now rapidly warming (somewhere between -5 and 0C) with some further warming happening tomorrow. It seems unlikely therefore that we would see much snow falling Monday night/Tuesday morning. The 18z NAE still indicates a brief snow risk though.
  5. Hiya! Yes, a great day thanks. Hope you had a good time - and enjoy the rest of the festive period, of course. Thanks for the comments about the pics. I have mixed feelings about the upcoming snow, as have family coming over this week. Incidentally, just been looking at some other models (i.e. GFS, UMO, ECM) and I think by half way through Tuesday (latest) the upper air is too warm for snow (>0C) so we could be looking at freezing rain, or rain falling on to frozen surfaces. The other possibility (and in my eyes, the most likely) is no (or little) precipitation reaching us. Noticed the TV forecasts have 9 degrees for our part of the world on Wednesday - crikey!
  6. Hiya! Its looking like early Tuesday into the middle of the day, i.e. the pinks on these maps midnight - 6am Tuesday http://expert.weatheronline.co.uk/daten/proficharts/en/nae/2010/12/26/basis12/ukuk/prty/10122806_2612.gif 6am - midday Tuesday - http://expert.weatheronline.co.uk/daten/proficharts/en/nae/2010/12/26/basis12/ukuk/prty/10122812_2612.gif
  7. Back from a few days break - still very snowy around Bedford, took some pics here - http://www.flickr.com/photos/57211569@N05/sets/72157625668763410/ We also got a flurry on the big day itself :smiliz34: The first new (12z) NAE chart is out - precip accumulation taking us up to midday Tuesday (28th), >10mm in some places - of course if thats all snow we are looking at 10cm - http://expert.weatheronline.co.uk/daten/proficharts/en/nae/2010/12/26/basis12/ukuk/rsum/10122812_2612.gif - Could be rain though, stand by for the precip type charts to update, will let you know...
  8. Did you know Hootenannay is pre-recorded (before Christmas) and not live at all, so I take it Roger has already done his filming - too late for requests Piers Corbyn is indeed 'kind of mocked' and for a reason, his track record is awful and have you ever seen a forecast by him that is not sensationalist? His methods are also not peer-reviewed, but not sure why I got as far as trying to analyse those. OK, I'm taking a few days off.
  9. Looks like we'll have snow on the ground for the 2nd consecutive Christmas here - not bad at all Seasons Greetings all , my wish is for an early Spring :w00t:
  10. I would guess you have a dodgy thermometer. It didn't get below -4 anywhere in the region last night http://www.met.reading.ac.uk/~brugge/amextremes.html
  11. I'm in Bedford and there wasn't any snow last night that I saw here? (and just a few flakes today) Just the 7 inches from SAturday gradually melting away. However there was a lot of snow earlier today in other parts of Bedfordshire, also Northants and Milton Keynes close by - so probably something to do with that.
  12. Would make it the coldest winter since 2005/2006 (which was 0.4 below normal). Only 3 years then!
  13. I think the realistic target is coldest since 2001 (i.e somewhere between 3.6C and 4.4C).
  14. Good stuff! I am prone to being ruled by the weather, aswell as the results of my football team. Certainly in a happier mood when the weather I like is forecast or comes into fruition. If a long spell of mild weather is predicted I think its best for my state of mind to stay away from weather websites and forums altogether and try to think of something else, but I still take my daily observations and have been since I was a teenager (going back to the early 90s). The other day I think I spent more time on weather forums than getting on with my day job! Yes, I'm sure my colleagues at work think I'm pretty odd. Ho hum..... Can't imagine life without the passion though.
  15. I've not seen any snow falling in Bedford this autumn/winter but saw some snow on cars that had travelled into Bedford from MK/Northants/Luton etc on the morning of 29 October.
  16. How is this going to be verified, there aren't weather stations at several of the locations listed?
