Perhaps this is the ultimate comment on this Winter so far - Mrs HS tells me that the bird seed she has hanging out in copious quantities has gone mouldy, the birds are no longer needing it! Go figure.

so it's a little like watching your football team heading to half time 1-0 down. If we're still having the same let-downs by the end of February then even I'll concede it's almost time to give up, but that's six long weeks away.
I'm a Leeds United fan and this winter is like the 6-0 thrashing they took last Saturday Catch!

Would even take a few more decent cauld, clear nights at this stage - opps to use the telescope have been extremely limited this winter so far, too.
Agreed Polar Gael my telescopes are likewise moribund.

Nice picture of a sundog:
A couple weeks ago the temperature hovered at 4 below zero as the sun rose over the Illinois River. Amazing things can happen in such frigid conditions. Because of the nearly 40 degree temperature difference between the air and the water, steam formed and swirled around the river. The steam turned into ice crystals and drifted up into the air. The ice crystals then acted as prisms, refracting the light rays from the sun on the right. That is how this bright and colorful sundog was formed. This view is from Eagle Cliff at Starved Rock State Park.

If the weather pattern didn't seem set to be so cloudy, I'd be thinking about get a telescope for up here - got to be one of the least light-polluted parts of Europe I think. Trouble is the soddin cloud!
Tell me about it Hairy Celt my four Meade telescopes are collecting dust though they are to my eye quite elegant ornaments!

Which raises the question:
What do squirrel poop and Topic have in common? - a hazelnut in every bite of course!

Happy Saint Stephen's Day to all on The Kilted Thread.
Minimum here was 2.2C at 03:02. Currently 4.0C(+1.0C/hr).
18.8mm of rain yesterday and especialy wet between 15:00 and 16:00 bringing total rainfall for December to 164.9mm. The R. Almond is high and has brought a considerable amount of silt downriver. The salmon run should be continuing due to the very dry conditions up to the last week of October.
