  1. Oh my f-ing God - my partner and I have just missed being hit by a bolt of lightning at our side door whilst having a fag. It hit the wall in front of us 2 feet away - it's burnt the wall - it was like someone switched all the lights in the world out for a nano second except for one single blindingly bright thin line. I usually stand on that stop - I have escaped death by 2 feet! Never seen anything like it - can't believe it - in shock (no pun intended). Anyone else experienced anything like it?

Jesus! Glad you're alright. What part of Swindon you in? Must have been the flash I saw here in Covingham.

  2. Not looking good here currently even this far North. Currently AT 0.3c, DP -0.1c soon to go above freezing and everything will melt.

There is clearly going to be a lot of rain out of this, at least at first, sorry folks. aggressive.gif

All IMHO but this band of precipitation is simply arriving at the wrong time and we need something to change in the uppers, wbfl etc. before I will start feeling positive about things again. wallbash.gif

I'm pretty sure that I remember that yesterday, people were saying that the system should drag the cold air in with it as it rotates.

    Or am I imagining things?

  3. Just got back home from my walk. My school had to be the only secondary school in Swindon open today, and after a 40 minute walk getting there, it was open for a grand total of 20 minutes before we were all booted out and then another 40 minute walk home. I wasn't too happy with that. Nothing around here has been gritted, and roads are impassable. I'd advise you don't travel through or near Swindon unless urgent. Busses are running, but very slow and behind timetable, and I wouldn't be surprised if they stopped running altogether in the next hour or two with a couple of hours of Heavy snow still to come. Stay safe all!

Currently about 4-5 Inches of snow here, with drifts in exposed areas of about 10 inches.

Just been out to take the missus to an urgent hospital appointment. Very nearly got stuck in the hospital car park! As Sainsbo says, most roads are gridlocked with cars skidding all over the place. The roads HAVE been gritted and they are continuing to do so (I know because one passed me in the other direction and sprayed my car :( ) but it's coming down so quick, it's not really having any effect.

Good fun though in a rear wheel drive car! Since mine is lowered and has a front lip spoiler, it's turned into a snow plough!

  4. If I remember the 2010 event correctly, in swindon it was supposed to be a snow to rain event as there was supposed to be a mild sector mucking things up, but it never happened.

Then I remember that 3 days later there was supposed to be a mild breakdown, and that didn't happen either! Instead it was just more snow which then stuck around for several days before a very slow and gradual warming up.

So even at T0, things can be considerably different from what's expected.

  5. Thanks - actually, interesting thought struck me re snow grains and whether we'll see some anthropogenic generation of this from hot outflow off power stations and the like into areas of freezing fog.... hmmmm

I remember when we had freezing fog in Bath in 2009 and seeing such heavy snow grain showers coming from factories in Bristol and Avonmouth. Really really surreal stuff.
