  1. hi lewis

    thanks for that

anyone know where sh sands is

    3.67 meters

    2.72 above prediction

I used to sometimes work in the Thames Estuary for Trinity House and passed it many times.  If my memory is correct it is near the north end of the N Edinburgh Channel, roughly NE of Sheerness and E of Foulness(possibly north of Herne Bay?).  I'ts one of the biggest of the old WW2 anti aircraft forts in the Thames Estuary.

  2. This has probably been asked adozen times at least, but I am about to head out to work, am I going out to an improving situation or a deteriorating one? Any thoughts much appreciated!

    Thanks

    CD

This may be of help... they were replying to somone in Burnham on this post but gives you an idea

South-Westerly winds are strengthening now, frequent gusts of 50mph or more by 06:00. Perhaps up to 70mph late morning.

  3. I am one of the many winter lurkers in this forum and decided to dip in with a few comments about the midnight GFS as it is quiet enough not to interfere with the more valuable posts which will no doubt follow later.

Only looked out to 180 hrs but am very pleased with the run, the unstable cold pool of air comes down from Scandanavia coming into contact with us and stalling over France by the end of the week, the remains oscillating back into Southern Britain during the weekend. 528 dam covering England and Wales almost all the period and even a 510 for 24 hours over parts. Surely some reasonable falls of snow possible over many parts of England. My previous concern was the break off from the jet near the dardanelles, which is taking warmer uppers into Eastern Europe then towards us but thankfully the temperatures around it fall by the time it hits our shores.

The icing on the cake at 180 hours is the heights of 1055 over Greenland which hopefully will play it's part in keeping the Atlantic depressions running south (Suppose it is a long way out but heights start building from midweek so a quite possible progression)

  4. Being on the coast I am prepared to accept there will be a thaw. But whatever happens what a brilliant run 26.5 cm level snow in a sheltered table in the garden, not quite the magical foot but bloody marvellous all the same. Will get out early and finish the igloo and let my son know we are renting out his room and he can live there from now, am sure it will be alright with a carpet and some furnishing :(

  5. Finally stopped, over 3 hours of mainly moderate falls. Half an hour ago we had 24cm lying snow. Now to watch that lump slowly moving in from the continent and a few showers which will hit us while we wait. If the Atlantic systems manage to break this spell there is a risk of serious flooding to many places. One way or another the weather could be in the news for a while. Talking of showers, it's started snowing again.

  6. Snowing again, amazing how I look at it in a matter of fact way now. Since yesterday there have been showers developing to the North of the Dutch/German border in the North Sea, these have fed down in a line towards this area and are still doing so, Nik from near Colchester mentioned the static nature of this source of showers yesterday. In the last 12 hours we have received quite a bit of snow from this stream and I would imagine the Clacton area have got even more judging by the way the line was moving last night. Current depth here is 20cm (am surprised it isn't more), would be interested to know what depths are in Clacton. It looks like we will get pasted Saturday night/ Sunday but wondering if it could be turning to sleet or rain here on the coast.

    Air temp -0.8°c -1.8°c

  7. good to see someone using the norwegian radar on yr.no

i have family in trondheim and southern norway, my cousin in trondheim was at -21c the other night. according to them -41c had been recorded further north in norway.

they are having extreme cold this winter, but, unlike us, they are prepared for it!

Is this system just off the norfolk coast travelling in a southwesterly direction?? hope so, as i should be in the firing line drinks.gif

Have been watching it for a while. My guess is South South West. It seems to be pretty active with ppn popping up around it.

I know it is nowhere near us all but has anyone seen the latest temps for Altnaharra -20.4°c!

  8. Been watching that stuff in the middle of the North Sea NW of Yarmouth for some time now. Up until now it was wishful thinking that it might continue to streamer which heads SW from here. It appears that it may come this way and is much broader than the current line of snow so hopefully will give more of you some of the white stuff. Who needs sleep anyway :)

    Temp -0.6°c DP - 1.5°c

  9. Anyone have a guess at how long this 'shower' will last, looks a nice tidy line upto Clacton...??

    regards,

    Steve

It has just about stopped here, we had nearly 2 hours worth, much of it moderate. Am not going out again to check depths as I am still wearing badminton shorts, I know I know there are postmen who deliver in snow storms wearing shorts lol. Good luck, hope it maintains it's intensity for you
