  1. This is just crazy.

These are the sort of geomagnetic storms that test our infrastructure.

Definitely the most severe geomagnetic storm since 2005, currently in the running to take the title of the largest geomagnetic storm of the 21st century, that is, one stronger than the halloween 2003 storm, possibly as large as the bastille day event. I just can't believe it myself. Everybody missed it.

Are you bricking it Yamkin? It's a huge storm.

Overhead aurora likely as far south as 52N, possibly further south than that.

For those in the far north there may be moments when the aurora is most visible in the skies to the south.

if i keep looking to the skys then.. do i have a chance of seaing it down here in wiltshire?

  2. Thanks, I'm not sure how long it would take but it appears to be rising pretty quickly as it's a lot higher than when I looked earlier. In fact looking at it now it doesn't look far off it now!

Nothing too bad here today but we weren't forecast to get the worst here - in fact we've had more than some forecasts showed yesterday. Currently about 15mm has fallen from some heavy bursts in the early hours and light-moderate outbreaks all day. (I still need to correct my weather station's gauge which is over-reading slightly and is showing 17.6mm).

Indeed anyone know what towns are down river from there?

  3. Did the photographer have a very long exposure and wide aperture to acheive those photos does anyone know, or was it actually visible that bright?

Well Ludgershall is not to far from me about 10 mins drive.. and i saw nothing.... these aurora's.. our really hit and miss...

  4. Hi Yamkin,

It is true that a high incidence of flux due to a CME can cause powerline problems, it's much less likely in Europe compared to the continent of North America as our runs of line are considerably shorter and the length is needed to create the inducted power surge. the national boundaries in Europe tend to prvrnt very long runs of power cables

Most of the other tings you mention are true, but this isn't a biggie

Yepp north america... 75 k with out power...... there really need to update there systems.. anyways anyone see the rock that caused a fire streak across Argentina and killed 1? was thinking of making a topic on that

  5. Just had a quick look at the ace data, things are looking very promising for uk auroral activity, wind speed up to 650km/h and an increasingly powerful magnetic field. The bz tilted sharply south at 1750 uk time, and remains there. Exactly what we need for strong geomagnetic storming. Remember that ace is around 50 minutes upwind, so what should commence very soon is a collapse of the nT measurement on land based magnetometers and the geomagnetic storm will intensify, the aurora will travel south.

In terms of the 3 hour planetery kp level, I anticipate recordings of kp8 into this evening. It looks like another uk wide aurora viewing opportunity is on the cards. Posted Image

Uk wide? what about down south?

  6. anyone seen the express front page? was just watching sky news paper review... there front page.. big freeze.. snow as early as next month.....

    Daily mail... now have competition!!

    http://www.express.c...arly-big-freeze

Paul Michaelwaite, forecaster at Netweather, warned “widespread” snowfall could be seen as early as November.

“We are looking at October being cooler than average, and November looks like another cold one, with temperatures below what we would normally expect.

“December looks on the cold side, although we are not looking that far ahead yet.”

    netweather... makes front page! haha

  7. Dvorak estimates are 90 to 95kts so top end CAT 2, however it looks to be better organised than this and I would go for a 100 kts at maybe 950-955mb, so a CAT 3 Major hurricane.

12Z tracks go against a US hit with a sharp NE turn just prior N.Carolina, if this happens we might have to start looking at our shores....

Golf stream is strong.. would die tho least would make the weather more interesting, But tbh the way there have got all the intensity's wrong.. wouldn't be surprised if the tracking of this is wrong.
