  1. Well goodbye last weekend & Tuesday's lovely warm 20c sunshine and hello 13c with cloud, wind & rain dross.

I guess we did well to make it this long given how short the warm season felt like it was going in mid Sept. Last winter certainly started and held on longer than this summer did but at least not as bad as most years recently.

It's always sad when you know the end of the good weather arrives and simply how long there is to wait to enjoy the outdoors properly again. Still a bitter Berlin winter for me and then gladly - a more reliable Berlin summer next year!

  2. Take any temperature (say 15c) - it will feel a lot cooler in autumn than it does in spring simply down to what you're used to. Going from regular 20c maxes to 15c maxes makes 15c feel cold. But going from 10c maxes to 15c maxes feels warm. It's called acclimatisation!

Also remember the sun is weaker and comes from a lower angle so a 15c sunny day in May feels loads warmer than a 15c in October. Of course that's an obvious observation for when being out & about in the sun but also don't forget it has an affect on buildings too - i.e. our living spaces and thus heating needs.

On the 15c sunny May day the building would be flooded in strong sunlight for a large part of the day so when you come inside it has warmed up significantly despite the relatively cool outdoor temperature. In October you might only catch a few hours of weaker sunlight doing much less of a job in raising the internal temperature of the building. Take today here in this house - it's 16c out and only 18.5c in. In May we could have 10c out and over 20c in!

  3. its getting hotter still.

Today 24C in my room during the night and only down to 22.9C right now at 4.42am with the front door wide open.

People putting heating on at 16C to me seems like you just wimps, 16C isnt cold.  No wonder people seem to adore the july drought so much, if they cold at 16C.

I still believe again is down to this mild weather, there is no air movement whatsoever outside, not even a breeze.

In 2011 that year when had indian summer I didnt use heating until december.

I bet if I walked into your houses I would be very uncomfortable with the heat.  I have been like that in a few houses  have visited where people live with extreme heating.

We could easily argue the counter point and claim you're a wimp for thinking temps in the low 20s are in some way 'hot' when in fact they're not in the slightest! 16c isn't comfortable indoor sitting temperature - sure there are some who sleep with the window open at -4c or sit in their shorts at 5c (and claim to be 'hard' because of it!) but the for the majority of folk temps in the low 20s are the most comfortable.

Go into any pub, restaurant, shop or office - are they unheated at 16c? No they are not! If so customers would leave... No - almost all are in the 19-22c range, perhaps higher on hot days.

I'm not saying you're wrong for liking it cooler - each to their own - but accusing the majority of people of being 'wimps' for normal behaviour is a little odd!

  4. Pullover??? Much cheaper.

If I'm in a jumper... she's in hat, gloves, scarf and 3 jumpers... plus she's not happy! She's off back to Germany tomorrow anyway while I finish up here and move over myself so once I've sunk some warmth back into the building again I probably won't need it again for a while. It's just with no one here for 6 days everything felt cold to the touch with a damp feel to things so it needed a blast!

  5. last year was defenitly cooler.

september this year I am hotter than I was in july last year.

still not wearing a top.  I think this is the first year I can remember off hand where I have gone into october been too hot to wear a top.

The last 2 days got a bit cooler, my room temp dropped to 23C in day about 21.5C at night with front door closed, with front door open at 3-5am I got it down to 20.2, so very close to been below 20.  However today is warmer again, hit 25.6 earlier and is 23.7 at the moment.

Sounds a very similar temperature profile to our office in recent weeks. South facing tin box so warms up easily - but in colder weather gets quite chilly (but quite easy to heat up again).

At home (with no one there) its currently 16.6c and falling. If you want a cold house then mine will be available very soon!

  6. Using some heating here in Berlin but only a little given I'm staying on the upper floor of an old apartment building.

At home its 18c in the house which ain't bad given the front curtains are closed and no one is in the house - it sure is warmer back home than here that's for sure!

No doubt on getting home a little heat will be needed just to tip it over into the >20c comfort zone.

  7. Then call me fussy for wanting >21c! I like sitting out in evenings - this is not possible with a max of 21c as it will be too cool by evening time - unless its especially humid and even then you'd chill eventually.

I agree there is a rather important defined line down the bottom end (0c) that we summer folk don't have.

Anyway I'll be in Berlin this winter and shall keep the sub-zero easterlies to myself!

  8. exactly and 21c is far more common than 0c and snow, because 0c and snow is not the norm here, it don't need to be 27-32c all the time, 21c is nice enough if sunny like today, i like warm weather myself but i don't like hot weather, 5c and cloudy is common but sadly that is useless weather as its to warm for snow usually

im aware i need to leave the UK  to see snow often, and the warmies need to leave the uk if they want constant warm weather, but at the end of the day the warmies have it better than the coldies here, and joe public moan when we have one or two snow days a year in the south, imagine if we only got one warm sunny day a year

The issue with your point is sure 18-21c is a fairly common summer range but not every 'warmie' thinks 21c at 3pm is enough. Me for instance! This means it is 18c by the time I'm able to enjoy it during the week - not warm enough.

25c-27c now we're talking very warm and therefore warm enough for a pleasant evening too. This is far less common and perhaps as common as sub zero minima both being 2-3c above or below the average max/min if you get me.

  9. Bizarre, yes it was more pleasnatly cool last week but it certianly wasnt cold heating needed weather, you guys seem very attached to tropical type weather if you needing heating in a hot september.

We're only 0.5c above average for September at this point so 'hot' doesn't really describe it. Remember September is the 4th warmest month of the year with average max around 16-17c here - we're a little above that this week but loads below it last week. Also remember that 16c isn't 'sitting' temperature and if you live in a cold house and the sun isn't out it will need heating somehow.

yes I do remember how cold it was in spring but thats nowhere near as bad as central heating and thick clothes takes care of it.

I remember distinctly a March day where central heating on full blast leveled out around 17c because it couldn't keep up with the loss due to a strong cold wind. Jumpers and all - we never felt warm in that period. Besides artificial heating just isn't the same as natural heating - there's always a cold draft from somewhere and cold spots in the house. Also it costs a fortune!

the warmies should be thankful that march can see nice pleasant sunny days with temps in the mid to high teens, i've never seen a frost in september let alone snow, so the warmies have it better, for the warmies it don't matter whether its 20c in september or 30c they are both good temps for that time of year, for coldies only ice days and snow are any good, not 3c and slushy snow like we often see in march last march was a one off, although i saw no snow

Warmies, warmies, warmies... I might coin the phrase 'comforties' for me as I just want it comfortable. For most folk 21-24c is pretty comfortable (aka 'Room Temperature'

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Room_temperature) so maxes around 25c and mins around 16c are in the comfort zone.

If its only ice days and snow that's any good to you 'coldies' then you must leave the UK - the same as if I expect weather like in July (27c sunny for 60% of time) any more frequently than once in 6-7 years. It's certainly easier to get pleasant usable weather so I'd argue folks who like 'mild' ('mildies' to keep this going...) weather (12-15c) have it best rather than 'warmies' or in fact 'comforties' like myself.

Anyway back on with some 'workies'...

  10. it wasn't that cold in late march was it, didn't the extreme cold come in mid march? and i don't remember april being cold, early june was quite chilly though

Given that the max temp for the entire month of March was 9c (with usual average maxes being between 8-12c across the month) and with many days barely above freezing even in the latter part of the month then I'd argue it was very cold.

Here's some maxes for Nottingham for the latter (the errm 'spring' part of the month!):

    22nd: 2c

    23rd: 0c

    24th: 1c

    25th: 1c

    26th: 2c

    27th: 2c

    28th: 3c

    You can imagine the mins.

Overall mean was 4c below average.

First time we made it average that spring: 10th April (11c), first time above average 14th April (18c) - this also being the warmest day since late January!

Those sorts of stats if applied in reverse on this September would put 4-10c on average maxes which would give us 21-27c across the whole month. If we carried on in the same fashion into October it would be the 10th October before we even saw a min hitting as low as 7c never mind anything lower. The maxes of course would continue in the high teens until that point.

That puts todays 18.5c 'heatwave' in context I think!

  11. Here inside its 18.7c - just risen a little since my own body heat brought it up from todays 18.4c max. With zero sunlight and an outdoor max of only 18.5c there's no way it can rise above these values unless: A) I heat it or B ) Have a party with many people in here.

Gladly these mild nights have offset the sunless days so it hasn't fallen much during the night. Got to be careful in case we suddenly get a clear night after one of these sunless days otherwise it'll drop like a stone in here.

Our office howver a different story - 23-24c today in there with windows open.

To the original poster - count yourself lucky that your bills will be vastly lower than mine!

  12. Hot? You sure you're in Leicester?!

It's humid because of the low cloud we have off the moist Atlantic feed - a very common situation for our maritime islands!

Really this weather temperature wise is as middle of the road 'pleasant' as it gets - at no time too warm nor too cold although the frequent cloud does make it feel somewhat lethargic. But a max of 18.5c today in Nottingham (thus the same in Leicester no doubt) its a long long long way from 'hot'. The nights are pretty mild but with so little sunlight even the warm houses can't be that warm surely? Mine is 18.7c right now just 1.5c above the current outdoor temperature - if anything it feels chilly in here but a jumper and some tidying are keeping that at bay.

Anyway do you not remember how cold it was right into mid April? And how chilly it remained into mid June? The same can happen this end of the year too with it staying mild for some time yet. Although lets be honest - todays 18.5c errm 'heat' isn't in the same league to last March's extreme cold so count yourself lucky!

  13. Sat, Sun & Tues were all very nice days (eventually) and I believe today might brighten up soon. Temps are staying up overnight so nipping to the bog in the middle of the night doesn't involve freezing to death nor is any heating needed bar the odd evening briefly.

Sure its quite cloudy and dull (sometimes) but it could be worse - it could be like what most of spring & early June was like - cold & cloudy with a constant heat sapping wind.

The wind 'n rain can kick in during Oct then the cold late on in November. Need to save money as last spring cost a bomb!
