  1. Nothing but rain all day in Balbriggan and Skerries.
  2. Here on the coast its mostly just cold rain. It would be a little generous to call it sleet. :o The temp is lower now than it was on Tuesday when we had some decent snow showers which is particularly annoying.
  3. I see that Dublin airport recorded almost 30mm of precipitation yesterday alone, and Casement a little less. The snow depths on the nearby mountains must be unreal at this stage! Here on the coast, it might as well have been all rain. No covering at any point, just cold waterlogged ground.
  4. Somewhat off topic, but according to the 3hr wind forecast map from Met Eireann the SE wind over the next couple of hours just off the Dublin coast will reach 37knots (43mph), which is just over tropical storm force! That is sustained winds, so gusts would be somewhat higher. Its howling pretty nasty here, Im about half a mile inland. In fact, the lights just flickered! Ive just been out and the wind chill is unreal! Just a few spits and spots of light rain or sleet in the wind at the moment. Havent had any covering at all at at this location yet.
  5. The heavy snow has very suddenly turned to rain, as if someone flicked a switch!
  6. Theres been more snow so far this morning here than yesterday morning, when I kept getting that soft hail stuff. Theyve been very light so far however, with very small flakes.
  7. Hi all! Ive been lurking here for a while and used to be a regular poster on TWO several years ago. I just wanted to say I that I feel happy for all those in SE England in particular, who got the heaviest of the snow today. Im sure there were some younger members who would have been sceptical that they would ever see such a weather event! Ive been watching the news coverage on TV with interest. I laughed when I heard B.J. remark that it was "The right type of snow, only the wrong quantities!" I only saw a lot of soft hail round here, and eventually some snow showers this evening which merely wetted the ground, but the month is young!
  8. It has been pretty heavy and persistent here at sea level in far North Co Dublin for the last couple of hours. Mostly sleety but sometimes it turns back to snow. Im sure the local hills (in excess of 100m ASL) have got a right pasting. There has been some very nasty gusts from time to time also. Im not suprised at some of the disapointment here tonight from some of the posters who are close to the Irish Sea coast. Although you can be pretty much guaranteed precipitation round here in an easterly, Im not a big fan of them from an IMBY perspective because Ive rarely seen them produce a lasting covering. The snow typically only survives along the coast if the wind becomes light enough:- this usually allows a land breeze of one sort or another to displace the easterly at the surface. Ironically, this happened in last January's (2008) very marginal easterly which delivered quite well locally! Even back in Feb 1991, which involved a colder airmass, the snow in this neck of the woods usually melted after a couple of hours. It wasnt until the Saturday evening (9th Feb) when the wind eased, that the snow really managed to accumulate and survive the night!
  9. The Isle of Man seems to be responsible for the gap in the shower activity Matt! :o Just very light flurries here on and off in the North County also! :o
