Currently in canaries, been the first time i have seen a thunderstorm here and torrential rain and floods here on the islands.

we had calima too in the last 2 weeks now severe downpours and lightning everywhere.
i am loving it tbh as not like uk rain.

the locals call is the DANA (instability in the higher atmosphere or depression higher up?)

anyway thought it might be worth a thread of its own.

I see there is a weather warning out now from yesterday until sunday. They now expect prolonged rainfall with up to 15mms per hour rates in some places.

I was a frequent visitor there in winter for quite a while and I can only remember one had weather like this.

Be interesting to hear from you as it gets going.

Been monitoring the system myself and yes DANA is just another term for an upper level cold pool / cut-off low which can generate some quite heavy rainfall and snowfall in the mountains above 1500-2000m.

I was lucky (or unlucky 😂 but it's always something I wanted to see after dozens of trips to the island in the last 6-7 years) to experience one myself back on the 22nd December, and it was quite fun.

Had a few showers in the morning, but decided to walk to the volcanoes in the following early afternoon. The showers started to rapidly develop, even capturing the volcanic crater and a distant shower on the drone. Made it back in time back to the car an hour later and it lashed it down properly, leading to some flash flooding and temperatures dropping to the low teens. A few loud rumbles in the mix just as the storms arrived. The next day it was sunny, 21C as if nothing happened with just a few large puddles remaining. In some ways similar to last june back in England.

I thought it was very cool to see standing water like this a few days later but with crystal clear blue skies, not something that is often seen!

I have been enjoying watching the lightning in person from my hot tub on the roof & a good storm last night rolled in.  Seems the other islands got a battering today but i am waiting till later.

The best storms are after dark, especially if close & elevated in nature

Loving this and it’s also something i have wanted to see.  Locals can’t believe it!  We just call it april showers in the uk 😄

my roof did leak though woke up at 6:30am yesterday to a waterfall inside my room 😂

Hoping for more storms and lightning overnight.  🖤

Sferic radar going nuts since Thursday night

It's the Western islands (Tenerife and Gran Canaria) that tend to cop it most, with these systems.

Today in Fuert is ok so far today, the odd shower, according to one of my pals there.

Mind you, about 7 years ago we had a bad storm in the early hours whilst in Fuert, woke us up at 6 in the morn. By the time we got out of bed at 9 it had cleared; a few puddles, plus loads of palm tree branches on the ground, were the only remaining evidence of the overnight storm.

Seems like most of the rainfall has fallen in central and southern parts of Fuerteventura as the webcam I check regularly in the north has stayed largely dry up to this afternoon. Some photos from Fuerteventura recently:

Drone footage of a town in southern Fuerteventura, barranco or dried river bed in full flow:

Once got caught by an epic thunderstorm on the GC 200 on Gran Canaria, walls  of water cascading down the cliff face and rocks hitting the geobrugg defences ,I believe the rd is closed now

Can see a huge anvil thunderhead out in the ocean whilst i am visiting friends from her balcony

The size of that thunderstorm is impressive, if it was dark i would probably be seeing lightning and anvil crawlers as it pushed up very quickly and became very powerful very quickly

Locals did some sand art to The Gods asking them to stop the rains on the beach this morning.  The rain has seemed to stop too.  Back in the uk now
