A snowfall in the midst of an exceptionally mild spell: Early April 1961

February 1961-April 1961 was exceptionally mild but at the start of the April 1961, there was a brief wintry snap that brought snowfalls to parts of the UK. In a number of places, it was the first snowfall of the year and at Nottingham, it was the first snowfall since February 1960.

 

 

It reminds me of what happened around the 7th/8th February of this year.

As a whole, April 1961 sounds thoroughly unpleasant, a rare combination (for the spring) of mild, dull and wet. Looks completely southwesterly dominated. Perhaps worse than any April of my lifetime.

Just hope this month isn't a re-run of 1961 and there's a change at some point!

Other similarities to this year include the long run of wet months from July 1960 to Feb 1961.

However a drastic difference was that March was very dry.

FWIW May 1961 was the exact opposite: dry, sunny, slightly below average and with late frosts!

June 1961 was also a fine month, and July 1961 was cloudy, cool but dry.
