Weather Alert

Category: Level 2 Warning

Weather type: Heavy Snow and Severe Gales

Affecting: Scotland, Northern Ireland and Northern England.

Time and Date Valid For: 12.00 noon Monday 17th January - 23.59 Tuesday 18th January 2005

Time Of Issue: 10.20 Sunday 16th January 2005.

A strong and cold west/northwesterly wind is expected to become established across the UK during the course of Monday. These strong winds are likely to blow in a number of heavy snow showers across many parts of Northern Britain, and perhaps further south into central areas for a time. Northern and western Scotland will probably bear the brunt of these adverse conditions, with heavy snowfall liable to produce accumulations of 5 to 10cm, but over 15cm in the highlands. Coupled with severe gales gusting towards 70MPH at times, blizzards can be expected along with drifting of and lying snow.

With winds of these speeds expected, some structural damage is possible whilst driving conditions will become dangerous with the wind and snow combined.

During Tuesday, further heavy snowfall is likely over high ground in the north, but lower levels should see the snow turning back to rain as milder air moves in from the Atlantic again.

This alert will be updated as and when is necessary.

Confidence Level: 70%

Note: This alert should be considered a guide and we strongly recommend you stay tuned to the Met-Office for further warnings and updates.
