Weather Alert

Category: Level 2 Warning

Weather type: Snow and Ice

Affecting: All of the UK

Time and Date Valid For: 18:00 Thursday 24th February - 18:00 Friday 25th February 2005.

Time Of Issue: 17.40 Thursday 24th February 2005.

The wintry spell continues across the UK, and although conditions haven't been as severe as originally thought, the usual winter hazards are still there.

Many places have seen outbreaks of rain, sleet or snow during today (Thursday). The main problem comes tonight when clearer conditions will allow temperatures to fall below freezing, giving a widespread frost, and with it the hazard of icy stretches in many parts.

Further wintry showers will continue into the night across many central areas, especially across the hills, i.e. the Pennines, with a risk of snow across parts of Wales, Northeast England and Southeast Scotland.

In addition to this, snow showers are possible in southeastern areas to the south of the M4, especially in Kent and Sussex.

Snowfall amounts in the region of up to 3cm are possible over lower ground in all these areas mentioned above, but perhaps 3-8cm over the hilly parts, where it may drift in the wind at times.

All parts will see a frost overnight, bringing the risk of icy surfaces where todays rain/sleet/snow has fallen and where snowmelt has occurred.

Roads and pavements will become hazardous so please take extra care.

During Friday, any wintry showers will gradually die out during the day before another frost returns Friday night bring the risk of ice again.

This alert may be updated with Flash Alerts where necessary. Please stay tuned to Net-Weather for any updates.
