Weather Alert

Category: Level 3

Weather Type: Sleet/Snow/Icy Roads

Affecting: All areas of the UK, especially in the east.

Time and Date Valid For: 11:45 Saturday 05th March - 10:00 Sunday 06th March 2005

Time Of Issue: 11:35 Saturday 05th March 2005

Wintry showers have affected many eastern areas of the UK overnight, giving a slight covering of snow in places.

These showers are expected to gradually work their way south/southwestwards during the course of today. A mixture of rain, sleet, snow or hail can be expected.

The snow will mainly be on hills over 150m, but it can't be ruled out on low ground, and slushy deposits may develop. Accumulations of 2-5cm are possible, especially over the hills. Later in the day, the winds are expected to veer more northeasterly, bringing in colder air to many eastern and southeastern parts. This will turn all showers to snow by this evening, and a light covering of snow is likely in East Anglia and Southeast England overnight as these showers continue.

Strong winds for a time later today may also cause any lying snow to drift and blow about.

Temperatures will drop below freezing overnight in all parts, so any snow, slush or snowmelt will freeze, causing widespread ice on roads and pavements.

Please take extra care if you are out or if you are driving.

During Sunday, any remaining snow showers in the southeast will die out, and all parts will become fine and dry.

Please stay tuned to Net-Weather for any possible Flash Alerts that may be issued if necessary. The next scheduled update will be tomorrow evening.

Confidence Level: 70%

Note: This alert should be considered a guide and we strongly recommend you stay tuned to the Met-Office for further warnings and updates.
