Weather Watch

Level 3

Confidence 80% tonight and 70% the rest

Areas affected

Wales, the south west and Channel isles tonight.

Rain and strong winds will affect the above areas tonight.

South to south west winds gusting 50-60mph will occur on coasts and headlands and some exposed inland areas. Rainfall totals seem unlikely to widely reach our Alert levels(15mm in 3 hours) but with the already sodden ground and some high river levels, there may be isolated flooding.

During Wednesday and into Friday an area of low pressure will move up the western fringes of the country. Its exact track is still uncertain.

Associated with this will be strong to gale force winds on its southern and western flanks and later in the north and west.

Speeds of 40-50mph with gusts of 60mph or more may occur in the west and south, including the Channel area and later, as the winds turn west to north west, in the north and west of the country.

As in the previous comment for the first Watch, a combination of wet ground and trees still in leaf may cause some damage or even uprooting of a few trees. This may lead to problems on roads.

Rainfall totals seem unlikely to be very high, below 15mm in any 3 hour period, and totals of 20-30mm through the period quoted. However, again, due to wet ground and some high river levels some flooding may occur.

Please refer to the river authorities for warnings for your area, see below.

for Northern Ireland only a list of emergency telephone numbers at the moment

Please keep watching Net Weather along with TV channels for any changes to this.

The second Weather Watch may need upgrading to an Alert.
