The second warmest May since I began recording, but the wettest by far. The first two days were rather cool, but it soon warmed up - with 5 of the next 10 days surpassing 20°C. The warmest of these was the 12th, which also so a magnificant thundery breakdown.

From then onwards, it became very wet indeed, though generally close to average apart from a few cooler days. The 13th and 14th were the lowest of these, with maxima of 12.1°C and 11.5°C.

The last three days of the month saw cooler than average temperatures due to a northerly airflow. During this 72 hours the temperature failed to reach above 13.5°C, with some low minima for so late in the month. The 30th also saw a light sleet shower, the latest date Ive ever recorded anything remotely wintry.

MAY 2006

Location: Yatton, 11 miles south of Bristol, 5 miles from the Bristol Channel

A warm and unsettled month - very wet.

1st - 2nd

The month started cool, although dry on the 1st. The 2nd saw low cloud and drizzle outbreaks throughout the day.

3rd - 7th

It became warm, dry and sunny on the 3rd with temperature getting up to 23C. The 4th was hot and humid with a high of 27.3C. Thunder in the evening was followed by a thundery night. The 5th was fine and sunny. Although slightly more overcast on the 6th, the 7th was warm and sunny although heavy downpours broke out later.

8th - 9th

This period was cooler and wetter. Rain fell throughout the 8th but the 9th was drier, though still cloudy.

10th - 12th

Another warm period was in stall. Temperatures reached 25.6C on the 10th and 26.1C on the 11th. However, the heat triggered some impressive thunderstorms, most noted on the 10th with spectacular lightning and marble-sized hail. The 11th saw further downpours in the evening. It stayed warm on the 12th but intermittent downpours brought rainfall totals up.

13th - 14th

It became cooler but drier for a time. There were sunny intervals at times.

15th - 24th

The weather turned very wet indeed. Heavy rain fell nearly all day on the 15th. The 16th started dry but ended with rain and the rain followed into much of the 17th. The 18th was a drier, sunnier day, barring a few showers. More consistent heavy rain arrived on the 19th leading to a total of 17.6mm. The 20th was drier and brighter with some warm sunshine but rain approached on the 21st. This was heavy in the morning but cleared to give heavy, thundery showers later with hail and thunder. 3 consecutive gust fronts passed over. There was further rain on the 22nd meaning another very wet day. The 23rd was clearer with a few showers but persistent rain arrived on the 24th meaning another wet day!

25th - 27th

The 25th was fine and dry with plenty of warm sunshine after a dull start but this didn't last as rain and drizzle lasted the whole day on the 26th and continued into the 27th. That meant a disappointing start to the Bank Holiday.

28th - 31st

High pressure started to build from the west. The 28th was dry with sunny spells and the same went for the 29th, though heavy downpours affected the area in the evening. A cold start followed on the 30th but both the 30th and 31st were dry and sunny adn temperature nudged up to 19.5C on the 31st.

Average Temperature - 16.0C

Monthly Rainfall - 156.3mm

Coldest Day - Monday 15th (12.1C)

Warmest Day - Thursday 4th (23.0C)

Wettest Day - Friday 19th (17.6mm)

Very wet, much wetter than average but also warmer than average. At least it has dried up for Half Term.

May 2006 Report.

By Paul Carfoot.

With low pressure close by, the first couple of days in to May were cool and cloudy and quite wet here in Burton.

However by the 3rd high pressure over Scandinavia started to extend its influence towards the British Isles bringing warm southeasterly winds and sunshine, this pleasant weather continued until the 5th.

On the 6th pressure began to fall once again and rain set in on the 7th, giving a couple of unsettled wet days.

On the 9th a ridge from the Greenland high pushed towards the British Isles, this produced fine warm sunny weather through until the 12th, infact Burton saw 4 days of wall-to-wall sunshine, very pleasant indeed.

By the13th the ridge collapsed and pressure fell over the UK and over Scandinavia, the weather became generally more unsettled, cooler and wetter as a cold front moved down from the north.

Pressure continued to fall and by the 18th an unusually deep low (985mb) for the time of year sat just to the NW of Scotland, this brought much rain and strong winds to many parts of the country including Burton.

This was the beginning of a fairly lengthy spell of very active Atlantic type weather conditions; the weather over all parts of the country was very unsettled.

There were 2 heavy thunderstorms with heavy hail here in Burton on the 21st and 22nd.

This very unsettled and at times cool weather continued until the 29th.

The 30th saw things begin to quieten down as high pressure nudged in from the west.

May was pretty much back-to-front with a warm, sunny and dry start; and a cool wet finish. The temperature failed to reach 20º C after the 13th and there were some unseasonally strong, gusty winds. It was the third wettest May in my records although some distance behind 2000 and 1994 for rainfall. The long, dry spell appears to have come to an end...?
