i've received contradictory advice on whether to water them while the fruit are developing. my bushes are in very dry soil (sheltered by the house) but well mulched. any advice appreciated.

Water by all means, H.C but if once you start watering you must continue it at regular intervals to keep the plants constantly moist.

If you allow the plants to dry out, when the fruits are developing, and then water again, the fruits will split.

A constant supply of moisture is the key.

makes sense, thanks, i'll see if i can impose some logic on the current random watering that operates.

Divert your bath/sink outflow to that area (but not your bog!!!).

Did you water them in the end?

Apart from the first year I planted them I have never watered mine and they have been lovely :)

yes, tm advised it (above). we've had 35mm rain in the last 7 weeks here, i don't think they would have done much without it, especially as they're sheltered from the west. runner beans are getting a 5 minute anthropogenic shower every other day too.
