only forecast 5cm of snow here tomorrow..but a big fall in temps from +5c down to -20c...trouble is my car is filthy and needs a wash desperately but seems pointless with temperatures up and down every few days

yeah it looks like they downgraded....maybe 10cm's here as strong northeast winds will surely help with upsloping.

Crazy temperature differences being reported over small distances in Vermont/New York state etc, literally from sub zero with freezing rain to a tropical 19/20c over the space of a few miles.

Worst ice storm in years coats southern Ontario, cuts power to thousands

About 350,000 customers across southern Ontario were without electricity after a massive weather system coated the landscape in ice, including about 250,000 in the Greater Toronto Area, where it could take up to three days to get everyone reconnected.

And yet we complain when gales bring down a few power lines, imagine the chaos here if such circumstances occurred.

This area must be one of the snowiest places in low lying USA at the moment, huge piles of snow building up and more to come over the next couple of days.

Yeah, Maine is pretty cold and snowy - and what snow falls there is likely to stay there, so the snow just builds up.

Yep indeed, Presque Isle looking like recording -34c this week too once the sky clears at night. I just looked again at the cams above and the snow looks deeper still today Posted Image Posted Image

Dangerous Cold Sweeps Across Northern US to End 2013

The coldest air of the season so far, featuring temperatures well below zero, will continue to blast out of Canada, the northern Plains and the the Upper Midwest early this week. The frigid air will also reach into the upper reaches of the Northeast at midweek.

Compared to 2 Previous Years, 2013 Was a Paper Tiger

But

Even if the pace of extreme events slowed in the U.S., the data this year showed that the march of global warming goes on. The world has not seen a cooler-than-average month since 1985. Globally, the 2000s were warmer than the 1990s, which were in turn warmer than the 1980s. And there is more CO2 in the air now than at any time mankind’s history.

In other words, the odds are increasingly stacked in favor of more extreme events, whether they come at a relentless pace, or at a slow, steady pace.

“I think relative to 2011 and 2012, (2013 was) perhaps more quiet, but is this a statement in itself about our calibration to the new normal,†Marshall Shepherd, director of the atmospheric sciences program at the University of Georgia, said in an email conversation. “I am not sure, but after a child runs a fever of 105, does a fever of 103 cause a sigh of relief? I can't help but think along these lines when I hear the comparisons to 2011 (and) 2012.â€

Very dangerous across the plains of North Dakota/Minnesota at the weekend, -35 uppers are extreme. Posted Image Certainly life threatening if not dressed properly.

Posted Image

This extreme cold spreads much further south and east into next week.

Posted Image

To the point where -20 uppers are encroaching on Georgia! so far south.
