October 2006 Cleadon Stats:

Mean max 15.4 (+2.3)

Mean min 9.6 (+2. :nonono:

Mean temp 12.5 (+2.5)

Highest max: 17.6 (12th)

Lowest min: 3.7 (24th)

Total precipitation: 66mm

Hail/sleet/snow: 0 days

Lying snow: 0 days

Fog: 1 day (11th)

Gale: 1 day (26th)

A homogeneously warm month, with slightly above average rainfall and slightly below average sunshine. It was slightly warmer than last year due to a higher average maximum; however it was not as warm as October 2001. I've noticed that with the exception of 1995, all notably warm Octobers since I started taking records have featured a higher positive anomaly for the minima than the maxima.

October 2006 Report.

By Paul Carfoot.

The first 10 days in to October saw the Atlantic trying to come to life with low-pressure systems moving very slowly towards the British Isles, but most stalled in mid Atlantic as they came up against a well established European high pressure block, but close enough for their frontal systems to affect the of British Isles, so it was unsettled and breezy for most areas.

Here in Burton we had frequent blustery SW winds and quite a bit of rain, up to 24mm by the 11th.

Pressure began to rise over the country on the 12th, as the Euro high extended its influence towards the UK. The weather in Burton was typical of autumn high-pressure influence, foggy mornings, lifting to low cloud and some brief brightness during the late afternoons.

The fine settled spell continued until the 15th. Pressure began to fall on the 16th, as low pressure approached from the west, but the weather in Burton managed to stay dry until the 19th, when it became very wet with 7 days in a row recording rain, Burton received a total of 33mm during the period.

The period from the 26th to the 30th was dry here with slowly rising pressure, which featured some pleasant warm sunny days. Finally the last day of the month saw cooler blustery conditions spread down from the northwest as a deep low moved east close to northern Scotland.

Summary.

Yet another above average month temperature wise in Burton, this was reflected by the some amazingly warm days for October. I recorded 23 days with temperatures exceeding 15c, some of which were recorded late in the month, for example, a maximum of 17.3c on the 30th accompanied by good periods of sunshine.

Stats below are calculated using the average of the mean monthly maximum and the mean monthly minimum.

Average maximum temperature = 15.6c

Average minimum temperature = 8.9c

Mean temperature = 12.2c + 1.8c above the 1971 – 2000 CET average.

Warmest day on the 2nd = 18.4c

Coldest day on the 27th = 11.7c

Warmest night on the 19th = 12.7c

Coldest night on the 31st = 3.9c

Ground Frosts = 0

Air frost = 0

Thunderstorms = 0

Wettest day on the 25th = 11mm

Rainfall total = 57mm

Year total rainfall so far 406mm

A remarkable month when compared to my four year temperature averages. The mean for October over those years is 11.58c, lowered only by 2003 when there were a number of sharp frosts. However last October was very slightly warmer than this year at 12.77c.

It was also the wettest month since I began recording rainfall in Jan 2005, ironically the second wettest month is Oct 2005!

Average max = 15.64c (highest = 21c on 9th)

Average min = 9.80c (lowest = 0c)

Mean = 12.72c

Dry days = 11

Rain days = 20

Rainfall = 135mm

of course you can, or

simply enter what october monthly data you have.

Just follow whichever of the ones above you prefer.

If you have Excel I have a monthly programme that I can send you. All you do is enter the values for max min each day, make any comments about rain, fog, frost etc in the required columns and it does the rest for you, avge max/min/mean, days with rain snow etc etc dates of max and mins?

Oh thanks John, I have set something up in Excel, but am always willing to learn from a master. If you could send something that would be great.

I'll follow OON's report as it appears quite basic. <_<

YATTON, BRISTOL, NORTH SOMERSET

1st - 3rd

The month started with very unsettled conditions. A showery end to September continued with violent thunderstorms through Sunday morning and afternoon.Thunder and lightning occurred overhead along with torrential rain and large hail and gusty winds. There were three thunderstorms all in all resulting in 34.5mm of rain. The 2nd continued showery with heavy hail showers though not as thundery as the 1st. The 3rd was however dry with sunny spells.

4th - 6th

The 4th was mostly dry with intermittent sunny spells interspersed with cloudier periods with light drizzle. The 5th was more unsettled with rain in the afternoon, quite heavy round 2pm resulting in 8.3mm. The 6th followed on with strong southwesterly winds funnelling in lots of heavy showers, some very heavy with hail resulting in 12.2mm.

7th - 15th

Thereafter, it became more settled and slightly milder. A southerly flow brought drier and brighter conditions although rather cloudy at times. There was rain on the 9th and 11th, mostly light, but the 10th was dry and sunny and warm for the time of year - the warmest day of the month with a high of 21.6C. The 12th was dry, bright and sunny throughout. The following three days remained dry and quite warm. A scenario set in of cloudy, dull and misty morning turning into clear, bright and warm afternoons.

16th - 18th

This settled trend to the weather changed when heavy, thundery showers pushed north during the morning reaching Bristol in the afternoon. A heavy thunderstorm shortly after lunch brought torrential rain, impressive CC and IC lightning and overhead thunder. This resulted in 14.5mm of rain. Light rain and drizzle persisted for much of the day on the 17th although the 18th was drier following a chilly start of 7.9C.

19th - 24th

Showers edged north overnight and into the morning, some heavy and blustery. These cleared by midday then returned in the evening with gusty winds and hail. The 20th also saw further showers at first but died away with pleasant sunshine. The 21st was very showery with some thundery downpours causing temporary localised flooding as well as 1 severe hailfall at midday. Sunshine however featured between showers. The 22nd saw a more persistent spell of rain which turned rather heavy by the afternoon resulting in 19.6mm of rain. The 23rd was drier though rain arrived again later, in somewhat thundery form but cleared by the 24th which basked in glorious autumnal sunshine and clear skies.

25th - 31st

The 25th was a wet and windy day throughout with moderate gales. The highest gust was 39MPH. 7.5mm of rain was recorded. The front cleared and the 26th was drier and brighter with sunshine after a dull start. As a result, temperature dropped overnight and a minimum of 6.2C was recorded on the morning of 27th. A sunny start to the 27th soon changed as cloud encroached from the west bringing rain by the afternoon. The 28th was then dull and dreary with intermittent light rain and drizzle and persistent rain overnight. The 29th and 30th were then dry and mild with intermittent sunny spells, more so on the 29th. The 31st was also bright and sunny but a northerly wind set in taking temperatures down.

Monthly Average Temperature - 13.6C

Monthly Rainfall - 140.6mm (4th wettest - 2001 (150.0mm) 2005 (162.4mm) 2000 (187.5mm)

Warmest Maximum - 21.6C (Tuesday 10th)

Coldest Maximum - 13.4C (Tuesday 31st)

Warmest Minimum - 14.7C (Thursday 26th)

Coldest Minimum - 6.2C (Friday 27th)

Another almost uniformly warm month, very similar to last year and falling just 0.3°C short. The month was mostly characterised by dull and mild days with sunny spells and occasional frontal rainfall.

The beginning of the month was mild and showery, reaching a top temperature on the 1st of 18.9°C. The middle of the month was much calmer with easterly winds bringing low cloud and fog but remaining very mild. It then turned much wetter and slightly cooler, the 25th being the wettest with rain all day.

Temperatures were remarkably consistent, with a variation in maximum temperatures of just 4.0°C from the 1st - 24th. During this period only 8 days had minima below 10°C. There were also only 2 days in the entire month below average.
