From the JTWC, Typhoon 01W; Kong-rey, 250 nm NE of Guam and heading for the Northern Marianas Islands; due to reach 75-110 K in 36 hours or so.

This seems to be quite an early start to the Northern hemisphere typhoon season; can anyone confirm this?

Not really. The main activity occurs from June- September but storms often frorm outside these months. For example, in 2005 there were tropical storms in both January and March. Hope this answers your question. :unknw:
