just a quickie before I post the full data.

April 2007 and how it compares with previous Aprils’

2007 has been the warmest on record for this area, 1943-1995 and 1997-present, with a mean of 12.2C. The previous highest is way back in 1943 with 11.2C. It is also probably the driest for the same period. It has the second lowest days of 0.2mm of rain or than any other year at just 7 days. The lowest number is with 1980 and just 5 days. However that month has a total of 8.8mm. This year we had less than 5mm, 3.0mm in my back garden.

So all round this April is pretty near to a complete record breaker for temperature and rainfall.

It is interesting to note that of the 5 years with a mean temperature of 10C or above, 4 of them occurred in the 1940’s, not exactly noted for global warming at that time!

The average daily maximum of 18.0C is quite astounding, more in line with early June than April.

Can't be bothered with the rest, I'm sure you get the jist.

The mean temperature of 10.8º is 3.6º above the 71-00 Durham mean, and had it not been for some persistant cloud in the last few days pegging the temperature back, then it would have been even warmer. April 2007 to me was a carbon copy of July 2006 for excessive sunshine, low rainfall, low rain days, and well above average temperature.

    Fantastic month.

    A remarkable month!

The driest month I have ever recorded (started rainfall recording in January 2005) and the warmest April of the four I have been recording temperatures. The mean is lowered by my countryside setting which helps the minimum temperatures to be lower than in built up areas.

    Average max = 17.2c (highest 23c on 15th)

    Average min = 5.93c (lowest = -3c on 5th)

Mean = 11.56c (2.66c higher than previous 3 year mean)

    Dry days = 25

Rain days = 5 (3 of which were the slightest possible drizzle)

Rainfall = 10.5mm (around half of which came in one heavy shower on 26th)

minor point Andy but if you measure to 0.1C then your averages, means must also be to 1 decimal place. Lots of people on here, even Philip Eden at times are guilty of the incorrect procedure.

Doing the mean to .001 appears to give more accuracy, however the reality is it does not.

sorry about getting on one of my hobby horses!

The driest and warmest April on record. Only 2 days in the entire month saw any measurable rainfall and 19 days exceeded a 15°C.

The month was almost completely dominated by dry and sunny weather, though an easterly breeze often brought in low cloud from the North Sea overnight. As expected, it was a completely frostless and snowless month. Only 3 days recorded a minima below 5°C.

There were also some very warm daytime temperatures. The 15th being the highest, reaching 22.6°C - the warmest April temperature Ive ever recorded. The 24th and 25th also exceeded 20°C, with the minima on the 24th of 14.1°C again the warmest on record.

Overall, an exceptional month and the 13th in a row above the 1971-2000 average.

    April 2007 Report.

    By Paul Carfoot.

Pressure patterns changed quickly during the first week of April as high pressure built strongly across the UK.

Clear skies lead to some quite cold nights with ground frost being recorded here in Burton on 10 consecutive nights, and a couple of rather cold days, but the stronger sunshine by day began to lift temperatures in to the mid to late teens, with 18.5c being recorded here on the 11th and a high of 23.1c on the 15th, so feeling very pleasant at times.

The 17th saw the high shift westwards to the west of the UK, a couple of weak fronts crossed the country bringing an increase of cloud, but no rain was recorded here in Burton, the most notable feature was quite a cool down, with ground frost making a return and top temperatures pegged back to 15c, but was still very pleasant never the less, under crystal clear blue skies and warm April sunshine.

Another very notable feature by this time was how dry April was becoming.

The 18th through to the 21st continued dry, and we continued to enjoy very pleasant, but now very hazy sunny conditions, never the less the temperature climbed back to well above the normal for April, I recorded 19.2c here on the 21st.

By the 22nd the high began to give ground a little and low pressure began to approach extreme western areas of the country, but by the time its associated fronts crossed here on the 22nd they were very weak and just produced high cloud with virtually no rain in Burton, just a few light spots noted during the late afternoon, never the less conditions remained quite pleasant under the bright skies with the temperature reaching 17c.

At last some rain arrived on the 23rd as fronts became almost stationary over the Midlands, the rain was light but was continuous for around 18 hours, I measured a total 9mm by the end of the 24th.

The 25th saw the pressure building strongly again over the country and the weather quickly settled back to warm dry and very sunny conditions, which continued for the rest of the month.

    Summary

An amazing month all round, with the temperatures well above average, well above average sunshine, and also very dry indeed with only 9mm of rain recorded, although not the driest month in recent years, I recorded only 7mm of rain in June 2006.

By some distance the warmest April I have recorded since logging began in 1984. The month was also the driest April in the same time span, only a couple of thundery showers in the early hours of the 26th prevented it from being a completely rain free calendar month. Sunshine was also well above average, around 150% with the official station at East Malling Research - just a few miles away - recording 277.6 hours.

For me in Kidderminster it was an Exceptionally Dry month with about 2 wet days which still gave little rain and it got very hot here and stayed warm here all month and never really felt cool.

May promises to be just as good here so yippee!

    Statistics for Cleadon, April 2007

    Mean Max: 15.3 (+4.3)

    Mean Min: 6.8 (+2.6)

    Mean Temp: 11.0 (+3.4)

    Highest max: 21.4C (24th)

    Lowest min: 0.6C (4th)

    Precipitation: 10mm

    Thunder/Hail/Sleet/Snow: 0

    Fog: 1

A record-breaking warm month, which was also exceptionally sunny in the first half, though the second half brought only slightly above average sunshine. There was no measurable rain until the 19th. It was a full 1.6C warmer than the next warmest April I recorded, back in 2003. The max of 20.3C on the 15th was the earliest reading above 20C in this area since at least 1990, and it was subsequently exceeded on the 24th.

This was also the first month where I used unaltered raw readings from the automatic weather station output (in previous months I have felt the need to correct for anomalously high readings on sunny days, where the sun heated up the instrument). I'm pretty pleased with the readings I've been getting; it seems unlikely that there's a mean anomaly of more than a fraction of a degree Celsius now.

Well, here's my stats............a remarkably consistent month from start to finish, nothing ridiculously hot or cold, but certainly well above average temperature wise, and well, we didn't quite manage the big fat zero in terms of precipitation...................
