General comment

What a turn around in rainfall after the previous two summer months; rain fell only on 10 days and only 6 days with 0.2mmm or more.

Summer 2007

It's the coldest since 2000 and jointly as cold as 2001 at 16.5C but not as cold as 1998(15.6C).

Last summer was 2C higher at 18.5C.

A few hot days have lifted this August above the mean for August 2005, therefore it's the second coolest of the five I've taken readings, otherwise it has been quite an average month although with the odd chilly night. No measureable rain for the last 12 days has meant the driest month since April and the rain that did fall occured mostly between the 15th-18th.

Average max = 22.06c (highest = 29c on 5th)

Average min = 11.06c (lowest = 7c on 9th & 30th)

Mean = 16.56c

Dry days = 22*

Rain days = 9

Rainfall = 62mm

*4 more dry days than June and July put together :huh: !

Very much a month of thirds. August 2007 divided into three parts: a fine and warm start; a cool, dull and sometimes windy middle and a bright but not especially warm end. Temperatures were rather below average while rainfall and sunshine totals were only slightly below normal. The month, neither notably good nor bad, ended in the lowest quartile of Augusts in terms of warmth, rain and sun since data collection started here in 1984.

Landmarks

  • Highest August wind gust and windiest August day (22nd) since installation of anemometer in 2004.

August 2007 Report.

By Paul Carfoot.

With high pressure close by, the first 10 days of August were mainly dry with plenty of sunshine, for the most part the temperature were around average during the day, but some nights were quite cool with minimums getting down in to single figures on at least five occasions in the period, the lowest being 7.4c, with a grass minimum of 1.5c on the 7th. The main exception to this was on the night of the 4th when the minimum of only 17.5c. The 5th saw a daytime maximum of 27.8c the warmest for the year to that point.

The weather continued settled with plenty of warm sunshine until the 11th.

The 12th marked a change as the high collapsed and allowed low pressure to build over the country, although here in Burton, showers threatened as cloud bubbled up, the weather stayed dry with some good sunny spells.

The first measurable rain of the month arrived here on the 14th.

With low pressure now in control the weather continued to be unsettled and wet until the 19th with rain being recorded every day during that period.

Around the 20th the weather began to settle down as pressure began to rise from the west, dry weather predominated with some warm and sunny days, with 24.7c being reached on the 23rd and 26.4c on the 25th. Dry settled and bright conditions then continued until the end of the month, but winds were generally from a westerly point so the temperatures stayed close to the average by day, with a few cool nights for August when skies cleared.

Summary.

A relatively dry and settled month to end the summer period. Some pleasantly warm and sunny days here, but also some cool nights for August, the month was warmer than July, but still came in a fraction below average, with a mean value of 16.1c.

A month of three parts. The first 12 days saw no measurable rain and were reasonably sunny and warm. The weekend of the 4th and 5th was particularly pleasant, reaching 24.1°C after a minima of 17.3°C, both the highest values of the year so far.

It then turned much wetter, with the entire month's rain falling during the 12th - 20th. This was accompanied by cooler than average daytime temperatures, though the minima were still above average due to the cloudcover.

During the final 11 days of the month it was completely dry once again. Temperatures were on the cool side however, with cloudier conditions and often a strong wind.

Overall, another close to average August - the third such in a row and the coolest since 1999. It was the second consecutive August to fail to record any single figure temperatures. The high maxima of 24.1°C was the lowest since 1993. The summer as a whole was marginally above average but the coolest since 2002. The high maxima of 24.1°C is the lowest on record (back to 1984).
