Hello

I am looking at the moon in Ayrshire and there is a big kinda ring of light round it. Can you look at the moon please and tell me if it my eyes playing tricks with me and what it actually is?

Do you understand?

Stuart - can't see the moon here (foggy) but would suggest it's a halo caused by ice - if I'm wrong no doubt someone on here will be able to tell you.

Theres a wonderful little freeware program called halosky.exe - it's a dos program, so extremely small, and has run for me on everything except XP Home on my Acer laptop for some annoying reason - it shows the sun and moon (and planets!) in realtime or at any date and time selected, and the possible haloes due to Ice crystals in clouds - usually cirrus, but some lower level thin clouds also provide suitable conditions for halo formation.

It can be found at: http://www.meteoros.de/halosky/halosky.htm

Good luck!
