WEATHER ALERT

ADVANCED WEATHER WARNING

Category: 2

Weather type: Snow and Gales

Affecting: North & East Scotland, Wales, Northwest England, Northeast England, the Midlands, Lincolnshire and East Anglia.

Date Valid: 12 noon Tuesday 27th January 2004 - 18:00 Thursday 29th January 2004

Discussion: Northern and Eastern areas of Britian will be under an increasing risk of heavy snowfall during the above period as various troughs/fronts move down from the north on the northerly airstream. As each system passes through, these areas will be at risk of heavy and persistant snowfall or heavy snow showers, which may give some heavy, localised falls. In addition, Wednesday may see the northerly winds touching gale force in eastern coastal areas, causing blizzard like conditions at times and drifting of any lying snow.

The hills may see up to 10cm of snowfall, with several cm's possible in other prone areas.

In addition, Northwest England, Wales, and the Midlands, will be at risk from some frontal snow on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning, with accumulations likely to cause hazardous driving....before a return to showers in these areas, falling as snow away from the coasts.

Roads and travelling conditions will become very dangerous so we advise you to listen to your local radio if travelling.

Along with the risk of snow, there comes a risk of widespread and severe frosts and icy surfaces, at night.

Further updates may be issued if required so please stay tuned.

Confidence Level: (75%)

Note: This alert should be considered a guide and we strongly recommend you stay tuned to the Met-Office for further warnings and updates.

Expect further updates as and when needed.
