Found this photo on Facebook of all places. Just would like to point it's not mine, but given the photo was taken just a few miles down the round from me I thought it'd be nice to post it up and prove that this area of the World does get thunderstorms and not just drizzle. I would hazard a guess the photo was taken somewhere around July 2006.

Call me Stupid if you want but would any of you actually set up under that lot in a Storm that produces Lightning, now granted out in Kansas I have set the old tripod up waiting for the Money shot and then looked up to the zinging Powerlines above me head, but a Power station..............cmon be serious :D

Good picture all the same though!

I thought it was safer to be under power lines, especially large ones like those, in a storm because any strike is much more likely to hit those and safely discharge into the earth?

Powerlines and lightning make a good photo too - might give it a go with our local powerstation should we get a storm in the next 10 yrs or so

Only the pylons are earthed, the cables are insulated from the pylons by ceramic tiles.

So its best not to go near in a storm IMO.

Ah yes of course, in that case I agree

Are all wires insulated from the pylons, even small telephone wires etc?

Well to be honest I was expecting a response questioning how safe photographing lightning whilst stood under pylons would be, hence would like to stress again that this photo was not taken by me. Also shows you the type of idiots that live round here though (I'm one of them).

Seriously is lightning that rare were you are that you could guess it being nearly two year ago?? Presumably that was the last time you had a decent storm??
