Yes, 10.5 km is shallow, but bear in mind that given the shallowness/narrowness of the Sea of Cortez/Gulf of California, the potential for major, devastating tsunamis will be restricted.

hi cp

i agree but the size of this would be a big concern

if overland.

i hope this is not a sign for a bigger quake via the san anderas fault.

The Canary Islands Government has said it is monitoring an earthquake swarm on the small island of El Hierro where in excess of 620 tremors of low magnitude have been recorded in the past week

We need to keep an eye on Yellowstone as there has been quake movement for a few months now. I'm starting to say not IF but WHEN Yellowstone erupts. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Maps/special/Yellowstone.php

The activity in Yellowstone at the moment is nothing out of the ordinary. The volcano observatory hasn't issued a change in status since February last year, which was "Normal". There is nothing at all to indicate the probability of an eruption any time soon, let alone anything major. Temporary swarms of tiny, shallow earthquakes are not big news there.

The swarm in El Hierro continues, now over 850 quakes, 138 yesterday. Still mostly small though.

Excellent links there guys n gals.

A question, is this amount of earthquakes that are breaking out over all the place normal for such a short timespan?

Also, it's interesting to note that we are soon approaching a new moon phase, which I understand can also be a contributing factor for more activity.

Yours curiously.

To add to your interesting post

Earthquake Magnitude is based on a "Richter Scale" of 1.0 - 10.0

Less than 2.0 not felt. About 8,000 per day

2.0-2.9 Generally not felt, but recorded.

3.0-3.9 Often felt, but rarely causes damage.

4.0-4.9 Noticeable shaking of indoor items, rattling noises. Significant damage unlikely.

5.0-5.9 Can cause major damage to poorly constructed buildings over small regions. At most slight damage to well-designed buildings.

6.0-6.9 Can be destructive in areas up to about 160 kilometres (100 mi) across in populated areas.

7.0-7.9 Can cause serious damage over larger areas.

8.0-8.9 Can cause serious damage in areas several hundred miles across.

9.0-9.9 Devastating in areas several thousand miles across.1 per 20 years

10.0 Never recorded; Extremely rare (Unknown)

Epicentre 42 km down, which might explain the lack of tsunami warning. Let's hope that it's right.

Do we know the magnitude? I am not good at reading those graphs! :-(

sorry karyo

the only place that gives you the magnitude is here

http://www.seis.utah.edu/req2webdir/recenteqs/Maps/Yellowstone.html

but it seems to take a couple of days to show them
