Central New Zealand has been rocked by a strong magnitude 6.3 earthquake that shook buildings in central Wellington. The "severe" quake struck 10km north of Castlepoint in Wairarapa at 3.52pm, GeoNet said. It was felt as a long, rolling quake by many Herald readers which lasted about a minute. The giant eagle hanging from the roof of Wellington airport to promote the Hobbit trilogy has fallen down due to the shake. The Weta Workshop eagles installed at the airport each weigh 2 tonnes, have a wingspan of 15m, and were suspended from the roof by eight cables. Wellington Airport could not be immediately reached to confirm whether anyone was injured or whether both fell down. Inspector Mike Coleman of police central communications said there were reports of damage to houses in Eketahuna, including broken windows, collapsed walls and fallen chimneys. However, there were no reported injuries at this stage. The number of reports of damage remained unknown. "Obviously some houses have been damaged," Mr Coleman said. "Windows have been smashed and crockery has been thrown around the place - the usual sort of movement with earthquakes."Mr Coleman said there were rocks and debris on roads between Woodville and Taihape due to various slips. The Manawatu Gorge road was down to one lane, while the road between Pahiatua and Palmerston North was closed. Bridges and roads around Eketahuna were being checked, Mr Coleman said. Motorists in the lower North Island were urged to take care. In North Wairarapa crockery broke, fridge doors were flung open spilling food onto kitchen floors and disheartened homeowners described the aftermath as "a bloody mess". In Masterton initial reports showed there was little damage in shops although some crockery had been broken. Fire Service central communications shift manager Mike Wanoa said there were no reports of major damage so far. "We're extremely busy at the present time. We've got no reports of damage. "The earthquake has been reasonably major in the Masterton-Eketahuna area, so we're getting multiple calls to all sorts of things at the moment, but we're right in the middle of it now." Electricity retailer Powershop, which has its headquarters in Masterton, tweeted that it had evacuated its call centre following the earthquake. The company said it would continue responding to email queries as best it could. A police communications spokesman said police had not yet received any quake-related callouts. A spokeswoman for the Earthquake Commission (EQC) said the agency was still gathering information on the quake and the volume of calls received. Tranz Metro said all train services in the Wellington region had been suspended due to the quake.

Schools have been ordered to close and a state of emergency has been declared on the Greek island of Kefalonia after an earthquake damaged homes and injured at least seven people. Hundreds of the island's residents slept in their cars after the magnitude 5.8 quek struck near the town of Lixouri on the western Greek island, and was followed by aftershocks as powerful as magnitude 5.2, according to the Institute of Geodynamics in Athens. Local officials said two ferries were on the way to the island to provide accommodation for residents.

The quakes at the Bight fracture zone are related to why the Iceland Earthquake/volcano people are checking an unusual earthquake by depth  on the Rekjanes ridge lately...Nice. that should brighten things up a bit not. Put the cat among the pigeon....

I hope the Pope and the Doves bit was not to do with this.

Or is there a rational scientific explanation LOL

Sorry should have said are the quakes related?

I hope it is volcanic at the ridge. I hope it is not a sign that the Bight fracture zone is about to have a bigger quake. Tsunami would be a danger if it did I would imagine.

The Atlantic has those nasty's too I am afraid.

Carlos le Stange suspects volcanic, I hope he is right.

One quake in Iceland is very deep at 40km, one of these at the ridge is that deep too. I feel they are linked somehow.

Maybe Iceland will have an eruption? Not been one since 2011 so it is about time.

I guess at Hekla or a fissure eruption somewhere near Askja or Laki. But Iceland being Iceland nothing goes as expected.....

A town which has experienced 30 earthquakes in 50 days is currently the "most seismically active" area in the British Isles, seismologists have said.

The weather is historic atm.

For the sake of the children and the animals.

Deal with it.

Note the" farms" themselves sit on higher land ...as do the rats. The floods are normal, but worsened by lack of river knowledge and plain old listen to your elders...again....I am sick of saying this in the countryside.

Time team folks.

Meanwhile on the Isle Of Wight.....

Some are thinking:- LOW pressure related hydro/geological effects will be numerous.

Landslips and erosion³

We are smaller as we think.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

The English Chanel is (weather related)dangerous at the moment.....Please make sure you insure against losses, carefully.

Seismotectonics of the Eastern Margin of the Australia Plate

The eastern margin of the Australia plate is one of the most sesimically active areas of the world due to high rates of convergence between the Australia and Pacific plates. In the region of New Zealand, the 3000 km long Australia-Pacific plate boundary extends from south of Macquarie Island to the southern Kermadec Island chain. It includes an oceanic transform (the Macquarie Ridge), two oppositely verging subduction zones (Puysegur and Hikurangi), and a transpressive continental transform, the Alpine Fault through South Island, New Zealand.

Since 1900 there have been 15 M7.5+ earthquakes recorded near New Zealand. Nine of these, and the four largest, occurred along or near the Macquarie Ridge, including the 1989 mate.2 event on the ridge itself, and the 2004 mate.1 event 200 km to the west of the plate boundary, reflecting intraplate deformation. The largest recorded earthquake in New Zealand itself was the 1931 M7.8 Hawke's Bay earthquake, which killed 256 people. The last M7.5+ earthquake along the Alpine Fault was 170 years ago; studies of the faults' strain accumulation suggest that similar events are likely to occur again

A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude between 5.7 and 6.1 hit the western Greek island of Kefalonia before dawn Monday, sending frightened residents into the streets just over a week after a similar quake damaged hundreds of buildings, reviving memories of a disaster in the 1950s. Authorities said about 16 people had been slightly hurt, mainly by falling objects, while roads, homes and shops were damaged and some areas suffered power and water supply cuts. Christos Kyrakatos, a resident of one of Kefalonia's villages, told Greek television that at least one person in his village had been taken away by ambulance. The power and water supply to the area had been cut, and residents who had fled their homes also had to contend with intense bad weather, with strong rain and low temperatures. Kefalonia Mayor Alexandros Parisis said the port at the island's second largest town of Lixouri, the closest to the epicenter, had been damaged. Earthquakes have been rattling Kefalonia constantly for the past week, after a 5.9-magnitude temblor struck the area on Jan. 26, damaging homes and slightly injuring seven people. Since then, thousands of residents have been spending nights with relatives or in ships sent to accommodate them. Schools on the island have been shut for the past week, and had not been scheduled to reopen until Wednesday, said Deputy Mayor Evangelos Kekatos. Authorities urged the islanders to remain calm and not approach any buildings that appeared damaged. An eight-member rescue team with a sniffer dog was heading to the island as a precaution, the fire department said, while Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias and his ministry's secretary general were also heading to Kefalonia to co-ordinate the response. The Athens Geodynamic Institute registered the pre-dawn quake, which struck just after 5 a.m. local time, with a magnitude of 5.7 and an epicenter 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) northwest of the island's capital of Argostoli. The U.S. Geological Survey registered a 6.1-magnitude. It is common for institutes to register different figures.

Seismotectonics of the New Guinea Region and Vicinity

The Australia-Pacific plate boundary is over 4000 km long on the northern margin, from the Sunda (Java) trench in the west to the Solomon Islands in the east. The eastern section is over 2300 km long, extending west from northeast of the Australian continent and the Coral Sea until it intersects the east coast of Papua New Guinea. The boundary is dominated by the general northward subduction of the Australia plate.

Along the South Solomon trench, the Australia plate converges with the Pacific plate at a rate of approximately 95 mm/yr towards the east-northeast. Seismicity along the trench is dominantly related to subduction tectonics and large earthquakes are common: there have been 13 M7.5+ earthquakes recorded since 1900. On April 1, 2007, a mate.1 interplate megathrust earthquake occurred at the western end of the trench, generating a tsunami and killing at least 40 people. This was the third mate.1 megathrust event associated with this subduction zone in the past century; the other two occurred in 1939 and 1977.

Further east at the New Britain trench, the relative motions of several microplates surrounding the Australia-Pacific boundary, including north-south oriented seafloor spreading in the Woodlark Basin south of the Solomon Islands, maintain the general northward subduction of Australia-affiliated lithosphere beneath Pacific-affiliated lithosphere. Most of the large and great earthquakes east of New Guinea are related to this subduction; such earthquakes are particularly concentrated at the cusp of the trench south of New Ireland. 33 M7.5+ earthquakes have been recorded since 1900, including three shallow thrust fault mate.1 events in 1906, 1919, and 2007
