July 2008 Report.

The first week and a half of July began very unsettled here with low pressure in control; rain was recorded every day up until the 11th. In response to rising pressure over the south of the UK, a brief dry spell of weather commenced on the 12th here with some fine and pleasant and sunny weather. Unsettled and at times windy conditions returned by the 16th with further rain as low pressure took control once more.

Pressure began to rise from the south on the 20th and the weather began to settle down again to give a period of very warm and eventually hot conditions with 28.9c being reached on the 27th, the hottest day of the summer so far. Low pressure took control towards the end of the month and the early hours of the 29th saw an intense spell of rain in around an hour between 02:30hrs and 03:30hrs, leaving 17.1 mm.

Summary

Quite a contrasting month with mostly unsettled and rather below average temperatures up until the 21st. From the 22nd to the 28th temperature were well above average with quite hot conditions at times, this very warm period ended during the early hours of the 29th with an intense spell of rain lasting around one hour, this producing 17.1mm of rain. The last couple of days saw rather warm conditions with a few showers.

The 4th very wet July in the last 5 years. Temperatures were close to average, a result of high minima. Daytime temperatures were disappointing. The month started and finished warm but contained a lengthly cool period. The 5th-21st averaged just 15.9C.

The first few days were predominently warm and sunny, with occasional spells of rain. The temperature reached 23.6C on the 1st, feeling very pleasant in low humidity. It was then all-change from the 5th, as the Atlantic weather moved in. From the 5th-21st just 3 days reached 20C. The 7th, 11th and 19th were very wet days, with 15.0mm, 14.5mm and 11.0mm of rain. Night temperatures remained average or above, with the only single figure minima of 9.6C on the 21st - the coldest of the month.

It then turned much warmer from the 22nd. The last 10 days of the month had a mean of 19.1C. The 26th was a hot day with a temperature of 26.0C - the warmest day since September 2006. The 30th also reached 25.3C. Although temperatures werent exceptionally high, the heat was supressive due to very high humidity. The dewpoint at times reached over 18C. There were some very warm nights aswell, with the last 6 days of the month having minimas no lower than 14.8C. The warmest was the 31st, when it reached no lower than 17.1C.
