Its hard to believe that prior and during construction, the Eiffel Tower was once consider by some as an "abomination", "a disgrace", "a producer of thunderstorms to Paris" etc.

Here's an article from January 1890 on the newly constructed tower and data from its weather station at the top.

Am I the only one who finds the Eiffel Tower completely overrated?

The thing is just a boring, uninspiring mass lump of iron. Give me the Rialto Bridge, St Stephen's Cathedral, the Hungarian Parliament any day before that Parisian ennui.

An engineering marvel, it was. It was the tallest structure for some 40 years.
