New England (US) winters of the 1830s

________________________________________________

I recently posted this on the "Eastern US" weather forum, and thought it might be of interest to some here too.

It's a summary of a weather diary taken by a regular observer at Providence, Rhode Island from about 1831 to 1840 (he kept going to 1860 in fact). My summary goes to the winter of 1839-40.

My general impression was that winters were not much different in that decade than they have been in recent years, and there is quite a variation. I was glad to see one thing in particular, the winter of 1837-38 was mild in New England, and I believe it was quite cold in the UK, so that couplet is possible in nature (it's what I'm predicting for this winter).

Here's the report, don't go to the snow reports part of this forum unless you want to cry like a baby.
