At 3.8C along with 2001, it was the joint coldest January since 1997. Suprisingly, it was also completely snowless and had a below average number of frosts. Maxima were notably low, with the high max of 8.5C beating the previous low value set in 2001.

The first 10 days of the month were extremely cold. The mean was just 1.6°C. The high temperature over the period was just 5.3°C. Like the last week of December, it was also rather cloudy, so minimum temperatures were mostly a degree or so either side of freezing. Day temperatures were rather cold however, with 6 days recording maxima below 3°C during the period.

From the 11th it then turned gradually milder as the Atlantic dominated. Temperatures were never very much above average, but high winds often kept the minimas up, doing the damage to the monthly mean. It rained on most days but the mobile setup meant sunshine was much more frequent than the first half of the month.

Overall, a cool month but disappointing for wintry weather. After last January's 172mm of rainfall, this year was a rather dry affair. It also meant it was the first time two consecutive winter months have come in below average since 1996/97.

January 2009 Lampeter, Ceredigion. West Wales

RATHER COLD OVERALL AND WET

Coldest January for a number of years, the second sub average month this winter. Wet with over 7” but far below January 2008 (248mm). Virtually all of the rain fell after the 10th.

The very cold spell at the end of 2008 continued to the 9th January, with severe frosts and a couple of ice days. Lowest minimum of the month was -10.7c on the 6th, with 5 nights in the opening 9 below -7c. It was however a mainly dry opening to the month.

A big change was completed by the 11th to very unsettled, wet and windy conditions, and with above average temperatures as far as the 17th. The month then remained unsettled with rain and showers at times, and temperatures mostly near to or a little above average. However there was a short colder spell with frosts from the 19th to 21st.

January was then a notable month for having rather below the average temperatures, having early very low minima and subdued maxima- indeed 9.3c was the monthe’s meagre peak.

In Great Asby, it turned out like...

Average daily maximum; 4.8º

Highest daily maximum; 9.3º (12th)

Lowest daily maximum; -0.3º (6th)

Average daily minimum; -0.1º

Highest daily minimum; 5.7º (15th)

Lowest daily minimum; -9.7º (6th)

No. air frosts; sixteen

MEAN DAILY TEMPERATURE; 2.4º (eleven year mean; 3.4º)

Total monthly rainfall; 198.4mm

Wettest day; 66.6mm (11th)

No. of wet days; twenty-three

Highest wind gust; 51mph (17th)

So not the coldest January I've recorded. That was 2001 with a mean of just 1.8º. 2003 was also colder with a mean of 2.1º. It was much colder than the previous two Januarys though, which had a mean temperatures of 6.3º and 5.0º respectively.

A very wet month, but it wasn't the wettest; last year had 229.2mm, and 2005 had 251.6mm.

January 2009 Report.

January began very cold with frequent moderate to severe frosts, the mean for the first 10 days was a just –0.5c, the coldest on my records which began in 2005 and also the coldest from local records which go back to 1992.

The 11th saw a change to milder weather for a time, but unsettled. The period from the 12th t the 28th saw some very unsettled and windy conditions, also with rather below average temperatures at times with frequent ground frosts and with rain, sleet and strong winds. The last few days of the month saw the weather settle and cool down as high pressure built to the north east of the country.

The mean temperature was 2.6c, the coldest on my records, and the coldest locally since 2001 (2.3c)

Daily notes: 6th Bright, but severe frost here this morning, minimum –6.0c, grass minimum –8.6c. A very cold day with the temperature only managing –1.3c up to 18:00hrs, despite good spells of sunshine. No wind to speak of. The evening saw the temperatures fall rapidly with a temperature of –7.3c by 21:00hrs. Cloud associated with less cold air spread in to the area late in the night and the temperature recovered to 1.2c by the end of the 24-hour period ending at 09:00 the following day.

Well, much colder than the previous January that's for sure. With my thermometer in the same loctaiona s 12 months previously, we managed 16 air frosts against 1 in '08, with the average temperature coming in alomst 5C lower than the preceeding January. Quite a contrast I'd say. I attach both months data for anyone's perusal!!
