John Holdren told The Associated Press in his first interview since being confirmed last month that the idea of geoengineering the climate is being discussed.

One such extreme option includes shooting pollution particles into the upper atmosphere to reflect the sun's rays.

Or maybe they are aware it is one of the causes, not the cause , and are looking at possible options to try and reduce the input of this particular driver, especially if other drivers (i.e. human ones) are proving very difficult to tackle ?

This would be outrageously irresponsible at the current level of understanding of future climate.

In fact, it could trigger exactly the wrong response, if they miscalculate, it could interfere with the natural variability of the atmosphere and lead to unknown end results.

We're generally in a flat period that shows slight tendencies towards a cooling rather than a sustained warming. It would be better to keep studying and holding off on this sort of risky approach.

This is, however, a predictable stage of the "invent a crisis, justify a solution" school of thought. Hopefully this will get some people off the fence, the sort of people who have kept quiet either out of fear of losing their jobs, or through a cynical belief that the "green" movement will at least lead to harmless acts of progress even if climate is not really affected by it.

In this case, climate could be the casualty. I can't believe that responsible top level scientists in this field have suggested this plan to Obama, who is not a climate scientist and wouldn't have any real understanding of the risks of changing the energy balance of the atmosphere.

one thing im pretty sure of is theres no need to reflect the suns rays because we dont need to right now maybe in a solar maxima currently where in the deepest minima for many a years.

oh dear thats not a good idear right now and in anycase let nature take its own path it will anyway whether man and beast get whiped out or not its going to happen anyway.

This suggestion and most other geoengineered suggestions is as false and miss-directed as someone who is obesely overweight taking medication to help them loose weight but still continue to eat an unhealthy amount of unhealthy food - they may look fitter and healthier but they are not. The only solution is to change their diet.

It's a case of wanting your cake and to eat it too!
