Started the Day in Childress and had a Chase Target of Enid (Ok) as this is where I believed would be the end of the Cold Front and get us on the Tail end Charlie. Turns out the last cell in the line fired just 30 Miles West of Enid so very pleased with the Target. Just unfortunate the Tail end did not produce the goods yesterday, but another great Chase and another Supercell for the team.

Well, I took my time, but I'll put a few pics here and explain how thigns went for me :D

I think you all know I targetted Illinois, despite chasing the Texas panhandle the day before. I'd finished the night in Clinton, OK a little before midnight and was up again at 4am and out the door by half past. I made it to Louisiana, Missouri right on the border with IL, at about 3:30pm and some stuff was kicking off in IL. I got stung by a bee at about this time and spent a little while trying to find somewhere open to buy some cream or anything for it, for just wrapping a wet towel around my lower back for the rest of the chase. I then got blocked by constructon for 15 minutes and also missed the start of the cold line initiating due to having to manage too many GRLevel 3 windows (the Kirksville storm went up in a radar whole between four different radar stations). I was in Adams county, IL, when I spotted the Kirksville storm on radar, and made my way west through Quincy which was the only near bridge option. It took me some time to get through Quincy due to Rush hour traffic starting and when I finally got onto Higway 6 West, the storm was confirmed to be producing a tornado near Novinger. I made it to Ewing, which was only 15 miles or so from Edina just after the storm had gone through Kirksville. I made a decision then, not to risk charging straight at the storm up Higway 6, but took a south option, which appeared to be over higher terrain, and would give me an option to drop onto the cell south of the main one which was also Tor Warned. This road was a nightmare being very twisty and going through lots of small towns with 25mph speed limits, but I still got the South side of Edina before the storm came through. It was showing one of the nicest wall clouds I've ever seen.

(Vidcap)

post-1731-1242702389_thumb.jpg

The wall cloud lost a bit of definition but still looked very good. I believe another area of rotation had formed behind this one at the time and was becoming dominant.

post-1731-1242702437_thumb.jpg

The RFD wrapped around the storm and all sight of any tornadic activity was lost

post-1731-1242702462_thumb.jpg

At the time of that last vidcap, the storm had just formed another Tornado north of Edina. This was on the ground for about 4 miles, and whist only EF0 appeared quite wide from the damage I witnessed. It passed north of the country club by mere metres, and only really had a couple of barns to damage. Now... had I taken Highway 6 all the way to Edina, I could have made it north in front of the path of the tornado and had considerable time filming it, before getting out of the way. As it was I took what I thought would leave me more options and it proved a bad choice.

I followed the storm East and it dropped another tornado north of Labelle, again only hitting trees and one farmhouse rating it Ef0, but this was also completely rain wrapped and could only be viewed from north of the meso. I finished off the night shooting lightning, but most of my first efforts are hopelessly out of focus, and once I got that sorted, rain was upon me, so I had to shoot at a very low angle, and I must have the very edge of half a dozen awesome anvil crawlers just skirting into frame where usually I'd be pointing skyward considerably more... I can't complain though... it was a blood pumping chase once it started fueld entirely by 4 32oz cans of Monster energy drink, and I learned a whole lot about chasing solo and managing the various aspects you need to be in control of. It's a shame I havn't had much oportunity to put what I've learned to use yet :D
